Level 1: (Your Level, guests and members with 0-9 posts) has maximum advertising. Level 2: (A user with 10 or more posts who has been a member over two weeks) have vastly reduced advertising (including removal of the large full screen closable adverts) Level 3: (A member who has been registered over a month and has over 50 posts, or has a special account like "artist" or "writer" sees minimal advertising. Level 4: (VIP Donators) receive no advertising.
All donators of $10 or more will never see an advert on our site again!
damn it all! Shinji doesn't know how lucky he's got it. he lives with Misato, has a penguin for a roommate, pilots a giant robot, and now THIS? so why is he STILL such a whiny little wuss?
Maah, Asuka walks all over Shinji at the best of times - everyone has to hit a yellow and rather than go for the empty spot she just absent-mindedly stamps on his hand.
At the best of times, I don't half wonder if Shinji is a bit of a masochist at heart and bring some of it on himself because thats his desire. He is practically an Uke-Emo.
Hmm, I'm sure he was content he was with Misato - just not very happy... then again, I've not really re-watched the first episode in a while but by episode 3 upwards he staring at the walls and riding the subway (Loop line) until the batteries on his walkman run out.

Given his masochistic tendancies I think he was a little happier after Asuke joined the series and gave him the regular abuse he seemed to crave, he didn't seem happy then when crawling through airducts with her screaming at him or shouting back at her with violent rivalry.
Really? I always thought a teenager without an intact family, being forced to face death, pilot huge robots to fight monsterlike creatures, has the right to have some issues with the situation and is a lot more believable and likeable that way.
If I'm not totally mistaken it's just a way to cope with the more than dire situation he's in.
While Asuka hides her insecurities and fears under aggressive and violent behaviour, Shinji takes it all in and gets a bit "emo" as you say.
I think it's a lot better than the usual "youth pilots giant robot and kills whatever is in his way, while keeping his cheerful mood and having no issues with the situation at all" formula.
I for my part liked the whole series (still one of my favourites) and I found Shinji to be the most likeable character of the lot. I always have a problem with people saying this or that character is a wuss, because I seriously doubt most viewers would be able to face such life and death situations with any more bravery.
But it's anime and fiction and everyone can say whatever he wants and blah blah, so I will say I'm sorry to be spoil sport and just shut up. Sorry ^^
As I think is shown by Asuka's complete mental breakdown after she is Mindraped by Arael that Shinji is definately the way he is by design. I personally love hating Shinji. I hope that bit about him being as a bad character and something therefore thinking the series is bad is a joke. I know a lot of people don't like Evangelion but I hope no-one thinks Shinji is the way he is because he's a poorly designed by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.
There is a different between being a flawed character, or in Shinji's case, having one.
I agree with CM and Rob. Shinji's mother died when he was young and his father shipped him off to stay with relatives that, it is strongly implied, did not want him there. Years later, his father calls him back, not to raise him, but to use him as a tool.
It has been argued that Ikari sent him away and stays distant because he feels guilty about his wife's death and doesn't deserve his son's love. But that wouldn't matter to a young boy looking for some acknowledgement of his existance from anyone.
Shinji wasn't born shy, angsty, and stand-offish. He was broken by others.
i fear i might have started something i did not anticipate.
i don't dislike Shinji, i just tend to think he frequently overdoes the existentialist/Freudian angst. however, those elements add a depth to the series that is not seen in any other giant mech anime. Evangelion is and has always been one of my faves.
Shinji is far too emo for me. I mean he gets to pilot a giant mech, live with Misato who is HOT, has Asuka and Rei around all the time, and is a hero to the masses.
Yet he still ends up going in circles with his character devleopment, being a whiny little pansy, and out of all the girls around him he instead takes up a love for Karwou (spelling?) yeah that series just didn't go over well with me Rei was the only character I liked only because she was fairly quiet.
