In this case the spanking was not given to the accident but the causes that lead to it. Young Margaret got too prideful didn't think there were other houses, hit the ball too strong just to show she was strong to some random boys and she was also feeling guilty.

It's not for the accident itself it was to release her from the sense of guilt
