I'm sure you all have experienced reading a sentence or a paragraph about spanking in a book otherwise not concerning the subject and it somehow stayed in your memory. This quote is from Ape and Essence, a novel from 1948 by Aldous Huxley. I read it as a kid and somehow never forgot this:
"The principles learned at a mother's knee -- or not infrequently across it (head downward and with shirt tails well rucked up), in condign spankings, sadly and prayerfully administered, but remembered, ironically enough, as the pretext and accompaniment of innumerable erotic daydreams, each duly followed by its remorse, and each remorse bringing with it the idea of punishment and all its attendant sensualities. And so on, indefinitely."

Red Tailed Hawk
Thank you K for the time you put into these. It is appreciated. And, Yes, There was a book in my first or second grade reader about Mark Park who walked in the dark. The story continued on and in the book Mark played with matches and accidentally set the curtains on fire. There was an illustration and written reference to Mark Park's father spanking him with a slipper on the front stoop of the house while the firemen put out the fire. Fire being extinguished in the house while fire was being applied to Mark Park's bottom. I wished I could find that book.
