As the sun began to think of waking, a young girl crunched the autumn leaves beneath her feet at a rapid pace on the campus of Golden Oak School for Girls. Despite the new school year having begun just a week prior, the sixteen-year-old had made few adjustments to her training schedule. It was still wake before dawn, stretch, and go for a run, every single morning, then fit in strength training in the afternoon, and Lyla Tomlin would have it no other way. Her priorities were set in stone: she was a magical girl third, a student second, and an athlete first and foremost. Just because she was saving the world didn't mean she'd give up her dreams!
The wristwatch on her arm beeped in alert that her workout was over, its sensors having kept track of the distance she'd gone. Slowly coming to a stop, she leaned onto her knees to catch her breath before taking a swig from the cute, powder blue silicone water bottle in her satchel bag. The white bunny faces adorning it made her smile every time she used it, encouraging her to stay hydrated. Her eyes moved to look at her watch, hoping for progress, and being disappointed to see the same stagnation in statistics she'd faced for weeks.
Forty minutes remained before her first class of the day, so, to Lyla, it sure sounded like breakfast time! The croissants from the café down the road struck her fancy at the moment, so off she went, practically skipping with excitement at the thought of a little caramel-flavored latte and a buttery croissant to get her day started right. As a typical female teenager, the autumn season with its dusky color palette and chilly winds made her crave warm, comforting drinks.
Naturally, bad luck struck in the form of a black, worm-like creature hanging down from a tree. It was a Familiar, shimmering and twitching as it began the process of hatching into a full-blown witch. Her inner conflict told her to leave it alone; wasting magic on it would darken her milky-colored soul gem, and she would receive no grief seed to clear it. However, she was struggling more and more to defeat the witches that were being born in Greyridge, as despite it being relatively small town, it seemed to birth extremely violent and powerful labyrinths as of late. If it grew further, there was risk that it might just be her demise later. Ugh.
The silver ring on her hand flashed brilliantly, her body being enveloped by the rich magic she held within her. The gem became a magical staff, and her school uniform turned to a dusty white dress and long boots to match. Its overall color scheme - or lack thereof - was pretty boring, but it suited her. Lyla was overall a pretty simple girl. Now that she'd assumed her magical girl form, she raised her staff and focused, blasting a white hot beam from its tip directly into the creature. Its mouth suddenly fell agape, stretching tenfold and racing towards her too fast to react as it swallowed her whole.
She'd been trapped in a labyrinth. Either her blast had been the catalyst it needed to hatch, or it was an incredibly subtle witch. Whatever the case, the stakes were high and her guard was up. Clutching her staff at the ready, she knocked a handful of egg-shaped minions out of the way, some physically and some with spells, and one with enough of a whack to send it flying like a homerun. Distorted images of leaves and plants teemed, hiding more worm fiends and biting eggs behind them as she searched for the witch controlling them.
Eventually, the witch revealed itself, appearing as a red and purple moth with multiple bulging, slimy eyes popping out of its body and wings, its many legs looking like gross, fuzzy insects in themselves. Narrowly dodging the creature's initial body slam, she summoned a slew of magical balls, sending them speeding towards the Witch's face. A few of them hit their target, so she repeated the tactic; however, its powerful wings flung them back with a gust, reflecting them back at her and sending her hurtling into an image of a tree. Breaking through a swarm of wormy minions, she created a net-like structure and tried dropping it on the moth witch, pinning it to the ground and allowing her to whack at it with her staff, conserving a bit of magic. Still, it was putting up a fight, snapping the net and bursting out again, leaving spores behind that made her cough violently.
This beast was rough. It definitely had taken damage, but looked mostly unfazed by her previous attacks. Lyla found herself worrying for both her physical safety and for the time, knowing she needed to win the battle quickly to make it back to school on time.

Before the autumn sun rises, a alarm buzz's in a young girls room. The light from the clock was weak but just intense enough to wake the sleeping girl as it flashed. Due to the stress of moving to this "big city", the country girl decided to remove the speakers, now it only lights up and vibrates. Disturbed by the vibrations of plastic on wood, she moans as she tries to cover her face with her blanket, trying her best to just that few extra precious moments of shut eye as she flops her arm over to hit the snooze button.
After a few minutes of rolling around, the girl groans as she slowly sits up, rubbing her eyes as she was getting up earlier then she was use to doing. Rebecca Roswell gently folds her blanket off her as she stretched, cracking her back and gasping as the her weak arms crack as well while she stretches' them too. Looking out the window, Rebecca frowns as she gets up for the day.
Doing her morning routine, she does her best to not wake her parents. Taking a shower, the 16 year old let her mind wander, thinking if she would need to shower again after hunting a witch or if her magic would protect her from over exertion. As she finishes, she dries herself off and heads to get breakfast, best to pick something up from the 24 hour corner store as to not wake her parents.
Now adorn in her school clothes. Rebecca carried her backpack tightly to her side. As she reached the store, the sun was starting to rise and she noticed her own silver ring light up a little. "A witch already." Rebecca speaks under her breath as she looks around, dodging between the store and into the alley.
Her gem flashes, before stripping her naked for a quick but sudden moment, only to be replaced with strands of light. The gem itself warps and forms into her blue tipped halberd. As the beams of light snap into place, Rebecca's uniform is replaced with blue fingerless glove with, a cute blue dress that has a cute white skirt and puff shoulders, all mixed nicely with her jeweled heels. Now in her magical girl attire Rebecca holds out her Soul Gem which was pulsating in a general direction like a compass. She looks over her clear gem, thanks to being still new to the world of magic, following it, she leaps off over the buildings towards the glow.
As she reaches her destination, the gem gives off another strange glow, indicating something else is near by. Looking curiously at it, then over to the Familiar, Rebecca was about to put her gem away before the creature swallowed her too. Quickly putting her gem away in hammer space, the nerd takes her best combat position, raising her weapon as she surveys the area, it was relatively safe, a major lack of minions patrolled but some could be seen minding their own business chewing on the floating leaves. However, it didn't take Rebecca long to hear the sounds of magic and battle. Tightening her grip on her halberd, she starts running as fast as she can to the battle.
As she approached, she ganders at the witches appearance and visually shivered as she hated bugs. Looking at the battle, she could see the witch preparing to strike down on the other magical girl. "Leave her alone!" Not wanting the girl to die, she lets out a quick cry as she thrust her halberd out straight like a spear. Thanks to her practicing the night became a magical girl, she learned her weapon could extend/retract. The blade extends quickly, piercing the side of the monster and toppling it to its side as it was unprepared for the blow. She was still a good distance away as her weapon retracts, she call's out to the other girl, "Get out of the spore! It isn't dead yet!"
As Lyla looks over the wound, it clear that the attack was just enough force to topple the surprised creature and pierce some of its hairy hide. Both girls are about thirty meters away from each other.
