"Good boy," said Gavin, still grinning. He handed over the nightshirt. "Please is the magic word—just remember that."
Gavin turned to go. As he passed Leoden, he said in a low voice, "That child is adorable. Please don't be a brute to him."
Leoden stiffened. "If he's disobedient, he'll get what he's owed."
Gavin shrugged. "And if he's not disobedient, then... be nice." He leaned around the older man to look at Moira. "Hey, killer, you should ask Leo here for a bedtime story. He's a wonderful storyteller!"
Leoden aimed a swat at Gavin's head, but the squire was too quick. He danced out the door, grinning all the way, leaving Leoden glaring after him.
"Pain in the ass," he muttered. As the words left his lips, his eyes fell on little Moira. "Ass...piration. Pain in the aspiration. Er, it's a figure of speech. Ahem."
