Here is an account of a spanking I received from one of my babysitters.

Babysitter spankings

Who here was ever spanked by their babysitters? I was by some of mine! Back in the ‘60s and early ‘70s, when I grew up, babysitters were often given the authority to spank the children they were minding if those kids misbehaved. This is something that can only be properly understood in the wider context of the times! Back then many adults and even older children, alongside parents and many teachers, had, what could be loosely termed, ‘spanking rights’ ! Examples of which would be aunts, uncles, the parents of friends and acquaintances, neighbors, summer camp counselors and of course babysitters. A kid growing up in those years had to always reckon with the possibility of a spanking should they disrespect or displease their elders and betters. All in the knowledge that if other members of the community were to spank them, they would more likely than not, do so with their parent’s blessing! Of course this was not universally the case; but it was a common attitude and practice of Society back then!

Babysitters were invariably female and usually high school or college girls. Often, when they reached 9th Grade and became Freshmen they were deemed old enough to sit for other people’s children. Some parents, both those of the girls themselves and also of children, felt that the 10th Grade was the right age to start sitting when they became Sophomores. For the girls it was an excellent chance to earn some extra money to supplement the weekly or monthly allowances. It was also thought that it would teach them about responsibility. All in all for many young girls babysitting was a ‘rite of passage’!

The other typical, though in my experience less common, type of babysitter were older, often middle aged ladies! Sometimes they would be spinsters or ladies whose children had grown up and no longer required looking after. I and my siblings had, over the years, 2 such ladies look after us: Mrs Brister and Miss Bailey. Otherwise, we were looked after by young high school and college girls! This continued until my oldest sister Ruth reached 9th Grade herself and was entrusted with our care, herself! From that day on, as long as Ruth and a couple of years later Sarah were available babysitters were no longer required!

Peggy Parker

One babysitter who spanked both me and my brother Mark was Peggy Parker! When this spanking took place Peggy was 15 and a High School Sophomore in the 10th Grade. She was a straight A student and a member of the cheerleading squad! A brunette with medium length hair, she was very pretty! However, despite being an exemplary student and generally well behaved girl, Peggy was not spared spankings! I knew, from conversations my Mom had with Mrs Parker that Peggy got bare bottom spankings over her knee, Mrs Parker’s ‘weapon of choice’ - as was my own Mother’s - being the hairbrush! Her Dad, Mr Parker, occasionally administered hand spankings; again on the bare bottom! Mrs Parker said Peggy’s spankings were usually for answering back, bad attitude, not ‘minding’ and occasional curfew violations! Parents in those days, for the most part, talked very openly about spanking! Often not stinting on the details, either!! Parents took pride and derived satisfaction from being known for their strict discipline! It was something that Society strongly approved of as well!

That evening, after my Parents had gone out we watched some T.V. with Peggy. My 2 sisters Ruth and Sarah, then aged 12 and 10 respectively, were at a sleepover at a friend of theirs. At 7.30 Mark, who was then aged 6, had to go to bed which, in spite of a little whining, he did. Then at 8.00 it was my assigned bedtime. After a few half hearted and futile protests l also duly did! After having seen me off to bed, Peggy reminded us of the ‘no talking rule’; something both of my parents, particularly my Mother, were very firm on!! Once the lights were turned off, there was to be absolutely no talking! Many a sore bottom had been earned for not observing that rule! Though initially, for the first offense we would get half a dozen or so hard slaps on our bare bottoms; with either Mom or Dad’s hands. We would have to lie on our beds, drop our pajama bottoms and our butt cheeks would be warmed! It stung plenty and produced a reaction for sure but it was not that bad! If we were caught talking again it was a different matter! Then it was either a proper, over the knee, spanking with Mom’s Hairbrush or a session with Dad’s Belt! We seldom needed a second reminder I can tell you!

I don’t think we really took Peggy that seriously! Whilst she was in the living room we were fairly safe, since because of the din of the T.V. we were out of earshot! But whenever she left the living room to, either, visit the bathroom or go to the kitchen to get a drink, our voices became audible! Twice she caught us out, each time issuing us with a stern warning! On the second occasion she warned us that “next time it’s a spanking”!!!! Even then we did not take her too seriously! On the third occasion her patience finally ran out and we were unceremoniously marched into the living room! The straight backed chair, kept in there largely for spankings, was placed in the center of the room upon which Peggy then sat. One by one we were each put over Peggy’s knee; whereupon our pajama bottoms were lowered and our bare behinds soundly spanked! As spankings go they were no big deal; but they still hurt and even though Peggy only used her 15 year old hand the slaps really stung and our buttocks were thoroughly reddened by the time she was done! I would estimate that I received between 20 or 25 spanks; after the first couple of slaps I merely winced; the next 4 or 5 produced OWS and OUCHES, and from then on my reactions were a lot more animated and I was sobbing like a baby! When Peggy let me up I was hopping from foot to foot, cupping and rubbing my sore and hot butt cheeks! After a minute or so of doing this I was told to stand in the corner; although in contrast to Mom and Aunt Rose, I WAS allowed to continue rubbing my ‘wounded heinie’! Next it was Mark’s turn and even though, l am convinced, on account of his age, she went easier on him, dishing out less spanks to my brother then she did to me, he howled and sobbed from beginning to end! She even briefly comforted him after she had finished, before escorting him to the corner as well. We then had to do 10 minutes of corner time while she lectured us on our behavior and the need to start showing her some respect! At times like this, I think our teenage sitters felt terribly grown up and mature as they themselves had been in our position many times themselves! She then escorted us both back to our bedroom and saw us both to bed. As she was about to return to the living room we both pleaded with her to “not tell our parents about the spankings”! Peggy said that, provided we both remained quiet and did not start talking again, she would not say anything to them! She was actually a ‘good sport’ and one of the more friendly and nice sitters who sat for us. Often if Peggy had no homework to do she would play games with us and treat us to cookies and milkshakes. The following morning we managed to conceal our bottoms from our Mom and a quick glance in the mirror revealed that there were very faint traces on my bottom from last night’s spanking! Mark’s bottom was slightly more marked than mine but by the following morning any remaining marks had virtually disappeared! We managed to avoid another spanking! Peggy never spanked us again; though on future occasions she often jokingly threatened to! And we got a few playful swats on our pajama clad bottoms. The one spanking that l did receive from her will always remain for me a very special and treasured memory!
