"Oh. Me." She was nervous. She had spent all day imagining and preparing what to say but she was struck by his eyes.
"Well," she tucked the strand of hair behind her ears. "I am one of the art director of the Leon Theater. I play the violin in a local group."
She was mad about listing off information. If she said too much theyd have nothinf to talk about.
"I...um... im 24." Gosh Lana, get it together. "I like live music and old movies. And i think that covers it" Gosh you suck girl.
"What about you?"

"I'm 25," Julian said. "I usually do a lot of different work on political campaigns... I was Councilman Williamson's campaign manager in the special election last year, but I decided to take some time off from politics to pursue my real interests."
What was he talking about?! This was a date, not a job interview.
"Um, so now I'm working as an assistant to the History Museum downtown. I like reading, writing, and travel - but I haven't really got the chance to do any of those things as much as I'd like.
"You play the violin? Wow, that's impressive. It's a really tough instrument to learn, isn't it?"

The art director and the history scholar. Why was she blanking on a subject.
"I've played since I was 6. My father was insistant that I learned a musical instrument and id always loved classical music. So the violin fit."
Memories of playing for family swirled in her mind. Lana had tried her best to please her father.
"Ive always wanted to travel. Id love to see Italy. See the architecture and learn the food."

"Yeah," Julian agreed. "Italy would be amazing... anywhere in the Mediterranean really..." She wants to travel! he thought. Still, not wanting to seem weird about the wine dark inland sea, he quickly jumped back to another subject.
"Playing violin when you were six years old! Wow, I'm not sure if I really knew what a violin was when I was that age." Wait, does that make him sound dumb? DO six year olds know about violins? "So, um... What's your art director job like?" he asked.

"Id love to take a cruise in the Mediterranean would be beautiful." Oh no! Now you sound bougiee with your violin and your cruiseships.
"But my job keeps me busy. I mostly help with the bookings and schedule of performers. Next month, we were booked a group of Taiko drummers from Kyoto. That might appeal to your historical interests.."
Did you really just suggest a second date. He doesnt even have a drink yet!!

"Taiko!" Julian exclaimed. "I used to volunteer at Japanese cultural festivals and I heard a lot of taiko. It's kind of grown on me... Even if it sounds a little repetitive sometimes." He laughed a little. "All that drum drum drumming. I'll have to check that out. Leon Theater, you said?"
Julian suddenly realized that he hadn't ordered anything yet. "So, Lana," he asked, "anything you'd recommend here?"

Lana noticed that her drink was watered down but still full.
"I really like the strawberry mojito. The mint really shines through."
Lana spun her bracelet around. Oh no. Word vomit. She could feel it build up. Lanas nerves were getting the better of her.
"Um...so have you had many blind dates?"
Why? Why?

What? She's talking about his previous dates? Well, since she asked...
"A couple actually." What sort of answer was that? Julian didn't want to sound like a player or something.
"I mean, no one I really had any connection with... What about you?"

"You're not blowing anything!" Julian insisted. "It's nice to meet someone who's honest and doesn't try to just sound interesting."
He took a drink and sipped. "I don't believe that handsome men don't notice you," he said. "A beautiful girl like you always makes an impression on me." He hoped he didn't sound stuck up. Maybe he should have tried to deflect her compliment...
