I'd suggest using IRC through Mibbit http://www.mibbit.com/. It's easy to set up on a website, and has full IRC features, a webchat client and PHPbb integration http://wiki.mibbit.com/index.php/PhpBB_integration. It's free and ad-supported, with Mibbit hosting the ads (also everything else), so it shouldn't be a strain on server resources. It also means any other methods of connecting to IRC that members use would still work.

EDIT: A lot of people are concerned about my lack of care towards the chat functioning correct so I will share a little bit of info with the public.
As some of you know in the beginning(two weeks ago) I accidentally left the board open before it was prepared. When I returned there was 38 members, 10 private messages, and about 20 posts. About 1/2 of the addons and scripts were not installed including the popular gallery. It's been very hard to maintain the forum and get to the relaxed finished process. Today I receive about 50pms a day and am juggling a few very important things to fix. Here's a small list of things I would like to achieve within the next few days.

You may notice is the Internal Server Error that is happening. This is a very important error to fix but the only way to get through it is going through the modified code line by line. I am making fairly good progress with this[/*:m:35avdhil]
You may notice the error regarding that my CPU processor for the host is throwing a limit. reason. Because of the error the processor is running in overdrive due to "who knows what". I currently have to go through a list of about 20 files to solve this. Currently the server is accepting by limiting but I am not entirely sure how long until it locks the site out. Yesterday is also locked me out of ftp rights for a good 24hrs, making it a little tough to work on it.[/*:m:35avdhil]
The forum rules and gallery rules is also on my mind. I have seen plenty of other sites which have been foolish by not setting their rules right. I've watched them run for a couple of months then one day. Bye bye, all gone. This is not something I would like to look back at if it happened to me.[/*:m:35avdhil]
Another important system is the story archive which is completely unusable at this time. This has too be in place. I consider this a very important perk of AOTK.[/*:m:35avdhil]

These are the most important things that I am currently working on. I think you all would agree that this error should come before the chatroom. Either way I will get to it and once it is complete it will be great. Please continue to remain patient. Between yesterday and today I have made a very large bite on my list. I'm sorry but everyone who loves to chat will have to use the horrid Mchat for now.
