Crime and Punishment {for Renton}

Rafe looked over at the woman when she offered up her theory about the reason why he was running, the kid snorting when she mentioned him spending the night in a cell. "That's only if I get caught and I don't really plan on letting that happen," the kid said, opting to ignore the fact that he had technically already been caught by her. The kid was just chalking that up to poor planning on his part since he didn't know about the security measures that were in place. "Dunno why you even care... or are pretending to care," he couldn't keep himself from adding in a disgruntled voice.

"I found you in 10 minutes," Ada said. "Rest assured, the cops will find you in less next time. Technically, I should have called them myself, based on the stipulations laid forth by the judge," Ada said, continuing to follow Rafe at a slow speed on the empty road.

"I'm putting myself on the line for you, Rafe. You don't have to like me, but for God's sake, I do care about you, OK? And, since we're finally talking, let me apologize for spanking you earlier. I acted rashly. I shouldn't have done that first thing when you showed up. If you're upset about that, well, you have every right to be."

Ada took a deep breath, almost surprised at what she was saying. But the apology was genuine, and not simply an attempt to get into Rafe's good graces.

Rafe just snorted again when told that he would be found in less than ten minutes though he was genuinely surprised when Ada pointed out that she should have called them. That was enough to give the teen pause, Rafe actually stopping and then shifting so that he could look at the woman.

"Why didn't you call them then?" he asked, his intentions being to make the words sound accusing but that wasn't the tone that ended up coming out. He just ended up sounding genuinely confused about the situation.

The look in his gray-blue eyes mirrored that confusion.

And said confusion was only escalated when she actually apologized to him for what had happened earlier. The word spanking coupled with the memory made Rafe blush but the kid tried to ignore that and play it off while at the same time trying to make sense of what was going on.

Easier said than done really.

"You're not making sense..." Rafe said, sounding beyond confused at this point.
