Dirk shakes his head, pointing back to the kitchen door.

“Young lady, those hands aren't clean. Go wash those marker stains off before you come back to eat, Lili.”

Lili pouted and slid down from the table and headed off to the washroom to wash her hands.

A few moments later she returned with clean hands and sat back up at the table, and held her hands up for Daddy to see. "All clean now Daddy."

Dirk leans over to get a better look, nodding in satisfaction at the better job that his daughter did in washing her hands this time.

“Good girl. Now, sit down and eat your dinner. I want you to finish everything on your plate, and then you can have some ice cream for dessert. That means that you have to eat your vegetables, too.”

He had already fixed Lili's plate, having put a small piece of the barbecued chicken on the dish, along with a dollop of mashed potatoes and some peas. He is pretty good at judging how much his little girl could eat, and this would be a good meal for her, but would still leave her just enough room left for dessert without getting a tummyache.

Lili looked up at Daddy, "But Daddy, you said I could have a cupcake if I ate all my dinner." She said sitting down to eat her dinner.

“I'm giving you a choice, sweetie. You can have either that you want. I'm guessing from your answer that you'd rather have the cupcake, then. As soon as you're finished eating, I'll get one down from the top of the refrigerator.”

Dirk sits down at his own plate and starts to eat, eager to get some food in his belly. Unlike Lili, his plate is full, as he wants to enjoy a good meal, and isn't very concerned with dessert. If he truly wants one, he can always get a cupcake later as a midnight snack. He would probably prefer the ice cream, though.

Lili started eating her dinner. "I like both Daddy, but we don't have cupcakes very often." She said with a smile.

“Alright, then. Finish your dinner, and I'll get you a cupcake down for dessert. You have to eat everything, though. No trying to hide anything. If I find any of your dinner in the trash can, young lady, you know what will happen.”

Dirk leaves the rest of that statement up in the air, knowing that his daughter is well aware of how she would be punished if he caught her wasting her food. There are a few things that would get her in trouble quickly, and throwing away good food would certainly be one of them.

Dirk looks over to see if his daughter needs any help cutting her chicken.
