Default Derivative Work

So I have come to the conclusion that the more you read stories and watch shows, the more derivative your stories are going to be. You may not realize it at the time until someone points out that *insert event / character * is similar or the same as to something or someone in other media. Original ideas are truly rare. Maybe I like the ideas from other media and incorporate them into my own work but it still seems like ripping off the original idea. I'm sure everyone wants their work to be new and shiny but it's just another copy of a copy. Not sure where I am going with this anymore, maybe just ranting or out of frustration at not writing anything in forever.

Feel free to leave your thoughts.

PS: Yes, I am still alive and kicking. There AREN'T any new works remotely close to being released.

I forget which really old Greek dude said it, but accordingly there is a finite amount of work, and everything after that is derivative. So, whoever you're told is what your work is derived from, is derived work, from an earlier work itself, and again, and again. What you want to avoid is when your work is a "copy" of another work. e.g. Star Wars (4 (-6?)) is virtually a copy of an earlier Chinese movie from the 1950's, even going so far as to use one character's name "Han." The setting was changed, and a lot of high tech was used, but the rest nearly identical. e.g. George Harrison, unknowingly copied an earlier work for his song "My dear lord." He even went as far as admitting that he unknowingly copied it. He knew the earlier work (He's so fine) and admitted he liked it (thereby was familiar with it).

Them old Greek dudes were pretty damn smart. I suppose you are a wise old dude too I am sure my work isn't a direct copy of anything I've read or watched but sometimes I feel like some ideas tread too close to something I've read or watched at some point without realizing it. I guess there are only so many combinations of implements and positions that a spankee can be subjected to.

I never knew about star wars being based off an older work! Looked into it and found out it's called 'The Hidden Fortress'. Going to hunt it down and watch it sometime, apparently it was really good (97% on Rotten Tomatoes).

Thanks for your insight.

You've got a point in here mate. Original will always stay original even there would be tweaks. But dont be discouraged - continue writing.
