Kakashi felt something wet on his pant leg and knew that Sasuke was crying. But the boy still didn't make any move to apologize, in fact he seemed to be battling to remain quiet. Stubborn boy...but I'll let it slide. Knowing that he had been pretty much the same at his age, the Copy-nin couldn't bring himself to drag out the punishment any longer.

Five more, to grow on. Drawing back his hand, he decided to make these really count. SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK!

The young Hyuuga ground his teeth when he heard his sensei speak. He didn't need Gai's permission to cry! He wasn't like Lee! He was stronger! Smarter!

But even as he told himself this, he felt tears starting to spill out of his eyes. He angrily wiped them away, though they were being replaced by new ones continually. He didn't want to reach his breaking point here, in the middle of the woods, in front of Sasuke. Taking a deep breath so his voice wouldn't break, he turned to look at his sensei.

"Gai-sensei...I won't attack the enemy without permission anymore, I'm sorry."

When he was sure, positive that Kakashi had finished, he laid there, no longer tense as the tears fell down his embarressed cheeks. He felt a small lump in his throat, as he began to softly sob. He took a deep, hitched breath as his chest heaved up and down slowly. There, he'd cried; was Kakashi satified now? He'd learned his lesson, he really had! "I-I'm s-sorry, s-sensei..." he sniffled, rubbing his eyes a bit. Was that what he wanted? An apoligy?

"Gai-sensei...I won't attack the enemy without permission anymore, I'm sorry."

Gai nodded solemnly in response to this, but was a bit surprised that Neji had actaully apoligized. He gazed over to his rival before giving him five more, harsh spanks to end on. He took a deep breath, and laid a hand on his back, rubbing a bit to calm him down. "...I'm proud of you, Neji." he whispered to him.

"I-I'm s-sorry, s-sensei..." Kakashi nodded at his student's response. He personally knew that Sasuke had learned his lesson before he was crying, but as he teacher he couldn't allow him to walk away thinking that staying mute was proper.

There used to be a whole set of manners set aside for Shinobi punishments, both for the offender and the castigator. Although flogging had been officially banned before Kakashi was a Chuunin, most Jounin and ANBU leaders expected their subordinates to have proper etiquette when corporal punishment was being administered.

If Sasuke was going to be a high-ranking Shinobi, like Kakashi knew he was headed, he needed to learn to apologize to his superiors, especially when caught red-handed. The Copy-nin rubbed his sobbing kouhai's back in sympathy. His first time had been hard too.

No matter how hard he tried, Neji couldn't wipe or blink the tears away fast enough, so eventually he just gave up. He gripped his sensei's leg strongly, wishing the punishment to be over more than anything.

Shortly after he apoligized, his sensei gave him five hard spanks. They were the worst yet. He then couldn't prevent himself from crying out. "Ite! Ite! Itayo!"

He covered his face in shame. He couldn't imagine what could be more humilitaing than recieving a punishment like a child and crying about it in front of his fellow Shinobi.

He felt Gai's strong hand on his back, calming him. "...I'm proud of you, Neji." Neji sniffled, but didn't respond. At least the punishment was over.

He rubbed his arm across him face, hoping atleast to get rid of some of the tears. He let out a small hiccup, and sniffled once more before he was able to calm himself down again. As Kakashi rubebd his back in large, slow circles, he began thinking of how much an idiot he was. He could've gotten himself, and Neji, killed! Killed! When the relization hit him, he lowered his head in shame; it seemedas though the punishment was really sinking in now.

Gai continued to soothe him with words of comfort, an by also conitinuing to rub small circles on his back. "Now, Neji..." he began after another minute or too after his pupil had died down to a gentle sniffling. "..do you understad why I had to spank you...?" he asked, and sent a glance to Kakashi, then back to his student.

"Sasuke, there are times where risking one's life is necessary to save loved ones or protect our village. But today was not one of those times. Today you risked your life unecessarily, only for the sake of rushing. Do you understand how your actions were foolish?"

Kakashi continued to draw slow cirlces in the Uchiha's back while he lectured. He waited for this student's response before letting him up.

"Uhhh...yes." Neji couldn't prevent the sob that escaped him before answering. He wiped his eyes again. "I could have gotten myself killed for disobeying yours and Kakashi-sensei's orders."

His breath hitched quickly, before he let out a small, choked whimper. "H-hai...I understand, Kakashi-sensei..." he gulped a bit, wanting nothing more at this point but to get up and retreat to his tent so he could tend to his rear. "...I don't know what came over me; i-it was extremeley dumb on my part, I'm sorry..." he replied quietly as a pink flush brushed across his cheeks.

"Good." Gai simply nodded and smiled, and pulled up the trousers, then extended his hand to the boy to help him up. once the boy was on his feet, he stood up and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Did you learn your lesson, Neji?" he asked sternly

Wrapping his arm around Sasuke's shoulders in a semblance of a half-hug, Kakashi hoped he was showing enough support as a teacher. He wasn't into the whole touchy-feely positive reinforcement like Gai was, but he didn't want Sasuke to think he was completely heartless.

Letting the boy up, he waited until the young Uchiha pulled up his shorts before patting his shoulder. "Off you go, it's only a few hours before dawn, catch some sleep."

"Yes, Gai-sensei." Now that his teacher wasn't hitting him anymore, Neji didn't feel as submissive, but he wasn't about to push his luck. He couldn't help rubbing his butt through his pants. He was sure both his cheeks were blazing red, Gai was no weak man. That Sasuke would pay.

((Do you want them to fight, maybe the day after, and earn themselves more punishment? Or should they make up? I'm ok with either. Hey are they sharing a tent?))

He felt his face go red, but the hug was rather...comforting if he had to say so himself. "A-Anou...sensei, let go..." he mumbled under his breath, and sighed with relief when Kakashi let him go.

He nodded, and quickly turned away, rubbing his rear all the way to the tent. 'That damn Hyuuga, causing so much ruckus that he caught Kakashi and Gai's attention...' he scowled

"Yosh! That's my Neji!" he took his shoulders, and brought him into a tight hug. "Don't you dare do anything like that again!" He sounded like mother; he gazed over to Kakashi and Sasuke, who was looking at him stupidly, and his then let his pupil go. "Ahem...erm...alright, Neji, off to bed!"

Gai's hug drove the wind from Neji's lungs. He could hear some of his vertebrae crack. Why did his sensei ALWAYS have to give bear hugs? Couldn't he be more discreet?

"Ahem...erm...alright, Neji, off to bed!"

Not needing another prompt, he hurried after Sasuke to their tent. Once inside he zipped up the entrance and turned to glare at the Uchiha survivor. Only he wasn't sure if Sasuke could see his scowl becuase it was so dark in the tent. He didn't adre say anything with Kakashi and Gai so close and still awake.

"Well, I dunno about YOU Gai, but I'm beat. I mean, I had that stupid overnight mission before this one and now we chased the boys around half the night, I haven't had any sleep since the day before yesterday." He yawned, his visible eye tearing up.

"Wake me up in the morning."

"Sure thing, Rival!" he replied, showing him his signature grin while sticking his thumb out. After Kakashi headed to his tent, Gai headed to his tent for the night, well, technically, it wasn't night anymore, but that didn't matter.

"Stop glaring." the Uchiha mumbled, turning to face him, not looking very amused. He narrowed his eyes at him, before crawling back inot his sleeping back.
