Glass House (for Terra)

Jean was very surprised that Akari's first question was about discipline. And a little concerned. Why was that this child's first concern? Was she paddled at her previous school? Jean didn't even know that any schools still did that in the 21st century. What an outdated practice, he thought.

"I don't think so. If they do, I won't give them permission to paddle you. So don't worry about that." Only a parent should have the authority to punish their child.

Jean came to a stop at a red light. 25 more minutes...

[Terra]

Akari nodded lightly at that and let out a sigh of relief. “Good. The school we went to was affi..a feeling… um… connected to the orphanage.” She said, stumbling over the word “affiliated”. She fidgeted in the car seat a little bit. “So they were allowed to do it to students.” She added quietly.

Jean supposed that made sense.

Jean was curious what living at the orphanage was like, especially after seeing that teenager's caned behind. He hoped Akari was never caned like that. She was only 7, though, so it was unlikely they'd be so harsh on her. He hoped.

"What is like at the orphanage? Did they spank you often?" he asked, turning at a four way intersection.

20 minutes left...

[Terra]

Akari blushed at the question. “N-Not a lot. ‘Specially not as much as the other kids. A few times, but only actually got paddled once.” She admitted softly, coughing for a moment. It wasn’t a full on coughing fit, thankfully, so she was fine.

Paddled? At seven?!

The thought angered Jean. He hid his anger behind a more rosy tone of voice. "Of course not. I can tell you're very well-behaved. I'm sure I won't have to do much punishing at all. Definitely no paddlings." Jean added. He wouldn't paddle her ever. Jean didn't even really believe in spanking, which is what it seemed the Orphanage raised their orphans on.

"Are you okay, sweetie?" Jean asked, hearing and seeing her cough.

There was almost no traffic, so it took less time than normal.

10 minutes left.

[Terra]

“I fell asleep during class, that’s why I got the paddle. Was kinda dumb because I can’t help when I get tired.” Akari admitted with a slight gulp as she remembered getting paddled that day. When told that she most likely wouldn’t have to worry about being spanked, she relaxed quite a bit. At the question if she was okay, she gave a chipper nod. “Uh-huh.” She said with her trademark grin.

They paddled a disabled student for falling asleep?! Jean wanted to throw hands with those people. Unfortunately, he'd never get to meet any of them. Or perhaps that was fortunate, because otherwise Jean would likely be sent to jail, and then Akari would be stuck with them again.

"Good." Jean said. If Akari hadn't been okay, he likely would have pulled over and called an ambulance. Jean could already see himself being a helicopter parent that overreacts at everything. As long as he wasn't a Karen, though, he could live with himself.

It wasn't too much longer before he pulled into the apartment parking lot.

Jean unbuckled Akari. "I'm going to have you sit on the couch while I bring everything in, okay?" He asked, carrying her against his hip into his apartment. It was on the second floor and was stylishly furnished.

[Terra]

Akari fidgeted as she was let out, holding closely she nodding. “I’d help if I could see.” She said softly, more saying she wouldn’t mind helping than lamenting her illness. She made a note of the stairs as they walked, but had no issues as she was being carried along.

"You don't need to help. Even if you could see, right now, I wouldn't let you help." Jean said, warmly.

Entering the apartment, Jean set Akari down on a comfy black leather couch. "Sit tight. I'll be in and out for a few minutes."

For the next 10 or so minutes, Jean ran back and forth from the car to his apartment, bringing in the boxes, medication, and Akari's book bag. Jean took all of it to Akari's room but didn't unpack any of it yet. He figured he'd unpack it with Akari once she could see again.

Once everything was in Akari's room, he came back to check on her in the living room. "You doing okay?" he asked, ruffling her hair.

Akari did pout lightly at not being able to help even if she could see, but didn’t say anything. As she was sat on the couch, she shuffled a bit and laid down slightly to relax. Once Jean was back, she blinked. “I could’a carried my backpack. I do that anyway at school.” She said. If you just heard her voice, it would sound a little pouty, but the look on her face was an indication that the pouting tone just to be a little silly.
