Laura Cohen could really feel her boss’ disappointment in her; she could see that she really let him down. This really stung the woman for she had always prided herself for being a model law firm associate, someone other lawyers (especially other women) could look up to. She really valued Lawrence’s approval, having gone above and beyond over her seven years at this firm to impress him. But know Lawrence knew that she wasn’t perfect, that she took shortcuts, that years ago she had cheated.

And there would be questions about her firing, questions that would inevitably lead to the full disclosure of the ugly truth to the entire legal community.

“I’ll need a guarantee,” she hissed through gritted teeth, feeling uselessly mad but truly forced into a corner. “That if I accept the punishment, everything stays in this room. Can you promise me that?”

After Lawrence promised it would all stay in the room, Nathan (being the astute observer that he was) saw the moment Laura’s mind was made: The brown-haired woman closed her eyes and bowed her head (as if defeated), her shoulders slumping.
A vulnerability in the career-driven woman had been brought out. The female attorney’s fate was sealed. There was no way out for her, not really. As much as she hated this, Laura Cohen knew she was going to have to pay a humiliating cost for her dishonest actions seven years ago. The brunette bristled from head to toe at the thought of being corrected, disciplined, sorted out by her own boss.

Groaning, the brunette stood up, her soul feeling heavy with dread. Her face looking dazed and dumb, she found herself wandering over to where Lawrence was seated and waiting.
