Alexa just nodded and did as she was told. After helping the cook with clearing the table, she went into her room, took her homework, and went to her masters study.

She hesitated for a moment, then knocked before she waited for him to call her in.

The girl was really nervous by now, her stomach doing backflips at the thought of a punishment.

Alfred sets aside his laptop as the girl knocks on the door of his den, shutting it down so the site that he's visiting is no longer visible. He had been investigating potential areas that they may have to travel to, researching if he should fly in through his own means, or take a passenger flight into the regions. He is still uncertain of where their final destination will be in a few days, but he doesn't intend to leave anything to chance if possible.

“Come in, Alexa. I'm ready for you.”

The girl gulped and went inside of her masters study. She sighed and gave him her almost-done homework, hoping he wouldn't notice.

Alfred takes the papers from the girl, not immediately looking at them. Instead, he begins to inform Alexa of his plans for tomorrow night, knowing that she would need to be ready and should know what to expect.

“The party tomorrow night is for some upper crust socialites, so it'll probably be a bit fancier than you might be comfortable with. Many of these people are lawyers, bankers and doctors, but they're also prospective clients, and many are already considering my services for their needs. Putting our best foot forward is absolutely necessary.”

As he talks, he starts to scan through the girl's assignments, looking over a list that Jennifer left behind to compare them to and see how far along she is.

Alexa nodded. "I'll not disappoint you Sir", she promised, a bit nervous, because her master was scanning her assignments.

As he continues to read, Alfred raises an eyebrow as he flips through the pages. For a moment, at least, his mind is diverted from the party as he notices that her homework doesn't seem to be up to speed.

“Is this all of it, Alexa? There appears to be a few pages missing. Did you leave some upstairs?”

Alexa felt guilty and shook her head. "No Sir, that's all", she answered softly, hoping he wouldn't be too angry with her.

Alfred frowns, showing his displeasure. It wasn't that he was upset that she wasn't keeping to her schedule. It was more that she didn't seem to be budgeting her time wisely, since she had apparently finished all of her chores on time, and had even been sitting and reading a book. Both of these things should have taken second place to finishing her homework.

“Young lady, did you not pay attention to how much time you had to finish your assignments? As long as you're hurt, I can forgive if you don't get your chores done on time, or have to put them off until you feel better, but you have no such reasoning for not completing your homework. Your homework should be coming first, young lady. You were also reading when I came to tell you to come to dinner. Was that a reading assignment, or reading for pleasure?”

Alexa looked at her master nervously. "Reading for pleasure Sir...", she answered honestly, not really wanting to admit it, but she knew he would find out anyway. He was that kind of man who ALWAYS knew when someone was lying.

Alfred sighs, passing the assignments back to the girl.

“I expect that this was an isolated incident, young lady, and that you'll make up every bit of it tomorrow so you can catch up. If you don't, then I'm afraid that it will be a session in the punishment room for you, Alexa. Now, sit down. I wish to talk to you some more about tomorrow night.”

While one day of unfinished homework isn't enough, at least in his mind, to discipline the girl, he would have no problem with doing so if she continued that pattern for a second day. He is willing to give her that chance, rather than punishing her immediately.
