Lying for beginners (with Tiger)

Sandy Alexandra Blum was an 8 year old little girl living in New York. She had shoulder long brown hair and grey-blue eyes. She was considered spoiled and certainly a mischiefmaker by most grown-ups who knew her but certainly wouldn’t point that out too much as Sandy’s father was one of the most known lawyers. Well he was very known to be eccentric and certainly very feared in court. Roland Blum was not to be taken lightly.

Even Sandy knew that. Though as both of them could be very stubborn, it was often a head on head with these two, even if Sandy sooner or later would be the sore loser. And sore she would be as spankings were often dished out...not only in court.

School was out and Sandy sat on the bench outside to wait for her father. He shouldn’t have any appointments around, so he would be able to pick her up.

Roland Blum was in thought as he walked to pick his daughter Sandy up from school. It had been a typical day at work. Sure, one of his co-workers had stolen a client out from under him--which royally angered the eccentric lawyer at first--but these things happened. He had to respect the game nature, although he'd respect her even more if she attempted to lie about it, and convincingly. Lying was an art form. A well told one rivaled the works of Renaissance Masters.

Roland paused briefly as he approached the school, scanning the outside benches for his daughter. While sometimes work kept him from picking her up, today wasn't one of those days, thankfully. HE smiled when he saw Sandy sitting on the bench, where she was supposed to be. Several times she hadn't been there, off getting into some mischief or other. Today seemed to be what others would classify as normal. He'd see the truth once they talked. "How was your daily dose of public education? he asked Sandy as he approached the bench.

Sandy smiled as well as she saw him and ran to him to give him a big hug. “Daddy!” She smiled brightly. Ugh! Asking about school.

Sandy was smart girl but often daydreaming got the better of her as well as laziness. This often earned her a reprimand from her teacher and teacher’s writing notes or bothering her father by calls was not what he liked the most. “I guess it was good.” Sandy said as she walked with him. “It was nothing new. All the same. Writing, reading and counting. As usual.”

Roland's eyes remained on Sandy as his smiling daughter ran over to him. he smiled at the big hug she gave him, returning it briefly in kind. Once it passed, he lightly ruffled Sandy's hair before turning to begin their walk home. They didn't live far, so walking wasn't too bad. He listened carefully as Sandy answer his question, mentally raising one eyebrow. Sandy was smart, but he knew how often she zoned class out, and the resulting notes the teachers passed on.

"Any notes today?" he asked, his eyes shifting to watch his daughter's body and facial language. as a lawyer it was Roland's job to spot deception. Some lied better than others, and he respected those who could hide theirs well. There was nothing better than a well told lie.

Sandy heard the question and of course she got a note for once again forgetting her gym things and not doing her homework properly. Though it was burried in the mess that was her schhol bag. “No.” She said but when Sandy lied she rarely could look at her father and sometimes she blushed as well. “We don’t worry about that. Did you had much work papa? Did you had many clients today?”

Roland's eyes remained locked on Sandy as he asked the question, carefully searching for tells. he knew she rarely looked at him when she lied, as her eyes and facial tics revealed the truth. Roland noted this, filing it away. Sandy also blushed, so Roland slightly turned his head to see if pink or red had entered her face. "It was a typical Thursday," he answered without adjusting his gaze. He gave his daughter credit for attempting to change the subject, but that was a simple dodge. It might work on other attorneys, but not him. It simply diverted from the lie and added nothing. "Although opposing council tried to divert attention....exactly what you seem to be doing."

The youngster looked up. Oh oh was he on to her? “I don’t papa! I just want to really know. It was...as you said a typical Thursday!” She smiled at him but there sure was a bit of nervousness.

They reached home and Sandy wanted her little 4 o’clock sweets which was a glass of milk and normally a cookie or two. “NowI really would like a biiiiig cookie! You too papa?” She asked.

Roland continued to watch Sandy, noting the slight nervousness as she answered him. If he thought she was lying before, this attempt made him certain. "Typical Thursday indeed," he said, half serious and half jokingly. He left it at that until the two reached home. he knew Sandy would want her typical sweets, but they would have to wait. Roland locked the door and removed his jacket as Sandy asked if he wanted a cookie. One sounded nice, but it had to wait. "Not yet. First...you and I have to have a talk." Roland turned towards Sandy, entering parental mode. "You lied horribly today."

Sandy’s big smile got smaller and she looked up to him. “ talk?” But then he mentioned her horrible lying. The youngster crossed her arms before her chest. “I didn’t! School was boring as usual!” Maybe the defensive would help?

Roland watched Sandy as her big smile slowly faded away. While not a tell in and of itself, it was telling when combined with the way Sandy crossed her arms. It was cute when his little one got defensive. "Deflection," he said matter of factly, briefly crossing paternal and lawyer mode. "Not very convincing, but good effort. I know school can be boring for you, but you know my views on lying badly, Sandy." He gestured towards Sandy's bag. She hadn't given anything away regarding location, but if she had hidden the note anywhere it'd be there. He doubted she'd throw it away on campus, at least at this time.
