Harry looked over both his horses fondly, patting them and talking to them quietly. He spoke to them in English, though he sometimes did in Gaelic. After a while he turned to Faolan and asked what she thought of them.
"Which one would you think I should take on this campaign" he asked, again keep to learn as much as he could about her from her response.

Caoimhe looked at the horses as Harry spoke to them and she actually smiled as she saw him do that since she knew that most men just viewed them as things, possessions. She looked at Harry as he spoke up and asked his question, the girl looking thoughtful before she asked, "Don't you have a connection, a bond, with one of them?" The question had relevance since she thought that was the one that the man should take.

Harry was intrigued by her response. She clearly had a very great love for horses and a natural affinity with them, and that coupled with her background perhaps explained her attitude.
"They are both very dear to me, like old friends. I suppose I have a connection with them both, for we know each other so well after so many years. But in some ways the field is no place to take a friend without their consent, it is a hard and dangerous environment. I need to be able to trust my horse and vice versa, and my horse needs to be able to stand the strain. Both of them I know can do it, for they have in the past."
He paused for a moment before continuing, for it was a difficult point. "And moreover, while I am very fond of both of these horses, I cannot afford to get too close to them, for this is war, and horses are killed on both sides all the time, just like men. We mourn them when we can, but we cannot afford to be stricken by it."

Caoimhe looked at Harry as he answered her question and she had simply expected that he would pick one but the depth to which he answered actually gave her pause and forced her to reevaluate her opinion of the man. It seemed to her as though he cared about the horses on a level more personal than what they could do for him and that gained a measure of respect in her eyes because so many people didn't feel that way.

"Then I feel that it is a hard choice but one that I cannot make for you," Caoimhe told him once he had finished, her gaze focused on Harry. "You simply have to weigh the pros and cons of the situation and make the best decision that you can in that moment and with those facts," she told him quietly.

Harry smiled at her sudden seriousness, although his last words had certainly been rather earnest.
"I simply wondered if you had an opinion one way or the other, that is all. It has been a difficult choice but I had all but decided to take Hector. I thought perhaps you might sway my choice at the last minute, but as you rightly say, the choice must be mine. He summoned one of the grooms from the yard and ordered him to have Hector saddled and brought round to the front of the stables, as he would be taking him into the field. He turned to Faolan.
"At this point I have the dubious pleasure of sharing refreshments with the owner. I am perhaps unfair, he is a decent man, but somewhat obsequious and a little dull. You can remain down here with the other grooms if you want, and be ready when I am back down, or you can wait on me upstairs, but if so then you must of course play the servant part well; pour our brandy and speak and move as little as you can."

Caoimhe looked at him when Harry spoke to her and she offered him a slight smile as she said, "Apologies for being unable to help you with that sir." she listened as he said that he had already more or less made the choice, the girl nodding her head and then just standing there. When he mentioned having refreshments with the owner and then gave her options Caoimhe looked at him for a few moments and then asked, "Would it offend you terribly if I just hid out down here and kept the horses company?"

Harry was gratified that she seemed both more cheerful and more polite.
"Of course you may stay down here if you want, though you may want to avoid speaking too much to the grooms if you can, and keeping a low profile. I should not be long upstairs, you can attend to the regiment's horses, I will ride Hector and you can lead the one I arrived on."

Caoimhe nodded her head when she was told to keep a low profile and not draw attention to herself, that not really a problem with her since she didn't much wish to socialize right now. "I will not make a nuisance of myself sir," she told him before nodding when he told her that she could attend to the horses that they had ridden here earlier. "Yes sir," she told him, inclining her head slightly and then waiting to see if he would have further instructions.
