Thranduil had tears weld up in his eyes and he pulled Legolas close. “Every day..”

The twins listened and then thoughtfully looked to the water.
“You don’t have mortality..right, Ada?” Elrohir asked.

Legolas hugged his father tightly, feeling tears fill his own eyes.

"For our family, since we are half mortal, we can choose the lifespan of an elf or a human should we so wish...your uncle fell in love with a human woman and chose to relinquish his immortality in order to grow old with her. " Elrond explained, holding on tightly to his children "love is a powerful thing...I could not deny him that which is so pure my sweetlings..." he took a deep breath "so aye, I have mortality, but I dare not use it until the valar have deemed it time for the elves to sail away"

Thranduil held him close. “But she is always with us.”

The twins held onto him, listening to his every word. Both were rather relieved that he mentioned it was a choice if he wanted use it or not. They could both see and feel his pain as he talked of it.

“Sorry..” Elrohir said, feeling bad for bringing it up.

"If she is with us why can't we see her outside of dreams Ada?" Legolas at this age still had trouble grasping the concept of death being a finality.

Elrond looked at them, his face softening "You have nothing to be sorry for my dear ones. You have just as much right as any to know these things."

“Well, she’s in our memories and hearts. We remember all those times we had with her, and the love she had for us. That is how she is with us, even if you can’t see her.” Thranduil explained to him.

The twins looked up, giving small nods before hugging their father close.

Legolas listened, nodding at explanation "Aye ada" he lay his head against his chest "I love you"

Elrond sat there, petting their wet hair before chuckling quietly when he noticed his pruning fingers "I suppose we had better finish washing up before we all grow as wrinkled as dates."

“I love you too..” Thranduil held him close for a moment before pulling back. “Now let’s finish up, yeah?”

“Or a raisin.” Elladan said.
“Or and oliphaunt!” Elrohir giggled.

Legolas nodded "Aye ada, your fingers look like tree bark" he giggled

"Or Mithranduir" he suggested cheekily, laughing with his sons at the wizard's expense.

The twins gasped, surprised Elrond would even go there. "Ada!" They said before giggling once more.
