The New Sidekick (For VGKForever)

It was a rainy day in Gotham city and 9 year old Lily was being driven to her now home where this rich woman was adopting her. She had bright brown hair and porcelain skin with green eyes. She was quite a thin girl that was now wearing black jeans black combat boots and a white tanktop and hoodie. She looked out the widnow as she pulled up to an old mansion looking ab it surprised. She had heard about Wayne Manor and how Bruce Wayne had passed away and left everything to his cousin Katie Kane. She huffed softly as the car stopped and she stepped out slinging her backpack over her shoulder. She sighed as the worker walked up to the front door with her and rang the doorbell. They waited patiently for someone to answer. Soon a tall man answered the door and welcomed them inside. He was dressed like a butler. Soon they were all sitting in the living room which was quite big. Lily looked around the house in awe seemingly shocked by how big the place was. She wondered what woman like Katie Kane would want with a huge mansion considering she lived alone. She squirmed a bit in her seat as she hear footsteps coming down the hall. She gulped a bit unsure of what Katie looked like

Kate Kane was a tall woman with long red hair and green eyes. A former soldier in the Army, she was well-built and healthy, her military boots giving her a slightly heavy tread. She hadn't been so sure about this whole adopting an orphan thing, but she supposed that was just part of the legacy she inherited from her cousin, Bruce. The man had adopted seven kids before his untimely death, and they had all left the Manor gradually, most of them going to live with the oldest, Richard, in Bludhaven. Her butler Alfred had done most of the work regarding the adoption, but she hadn't met her new charge yet. Just as Lily didn't know what to expect of Kate, Kate didn't know what to expect of her. She entered the living room just as Alfred was serving tea and cake, looking at the little girl on her couch. "Lily?"

Lily nodded softly and stood looking at Kate "H-Hi" she said "This place is huge..." she said as she looked up at the high ceiling. She then shuffled a bit nervously and sat back down. She looked at Kate and wondered why someone like Kate would want her considering her dark past. Her parents were killed by Alice of the wonderland gang as a result of having been some pretty important people. She noticed Alfred bring in some sandwiches and tea for them. He placed it on the table and looked at Kate and nodded softly as if to say "Talk to the girl". He then left the room to give them time to get to know each other. The case worker sat beside Lily and smiled at Kate. She then handed Kate a backpack full of Lilysb elongings which included a batwoman action figure and some comics. She also had a few outfits in there. She sighed and spoke softly "Lily is still going through a hardtime about the loss of her parents..." she said.

Kate had been prepared for that. She knew Lily was probably grieving still. She had gone through the same thing at Lily's age, when her mother and sister were murdered. It was part of the reason she'd been so willing to adopt her.
Kate took a seat on the couch and regarded her. Lily wouldn't meet her gaze for now, but that was okay. They'd been through the same situation, but Kate didn't think it was wise to open up to her about her own past right away. She was worried doing so would make it sound like she was making light of Lily's grief, rather than showing her she empathized with it. At length, she put a hand on the girl's shoulder.
"I know you're going through a hard time. But I just want you to know I'm here for you."

Lily nodded softly but didnt look up at Kate. The worker took out her action figure and handed it to Lily. Lily quickly held it close to her as it offered her some comfort. The worker looked at Kate and then back at Lily. The worker whose name was Ms. Branford looked at Kate once more "Shes really into comics" she said speaking softly "She likes Batwoman alot" she said nodding. It started to get dark outside and Lily looked out the window. She then quickly shot her head one way as she say somethign rush past the window. The girl stood clearly frightened. Branford looked at her "It was probably just a squirrel or deer" she said trying to speka logically. Lily frowned "Squirrels dont have blue on them.." she said huffing as she quickly hurried over to the window and looked out of it but was too late and whatever it was disappeared. Lily then sat back down and squirmed a bit nervously. Meanwhile in the batcave Nightwing had dropped by the pick something he had left there from his previus visit. He also decided to stock up on some weapons and he knew Kate wouldnt mind if he borrowed some. Alfred appeared behind him "Master Grayson I see you have finally come to visit again. Nightwing sighed "Im not hear for pleasantries..." he said is his dark brooding voice. He then slung the bag over his shoulder and looked at Alfred "i do miss you thought Alfred..." he said chuckling a bit as he sat and started to type on the computer as if trying to find something

Kate noticed the flash outside of the window, and knew what it was immediately. Obviously nothing to be afraid of, but she would try to set Lily's mind at ease anyway without telling her the truth right away. She hadn't been expecting Nightwing, but she would find out what he came for later. "Batwoman is cool," she told the girl, trying to take her mind of their unexpected guest. "She's no Batman, but she doesn't try to be. It was a big role for her to fill, but she's doing her best, and I respect that. It's cool to hear you're into comics though. I know a lot about the Justice League and Batman's family. We'll have to talk about it later."

Lily then took one of the sandwiches off the tray and started to nibble on it. She also took a sip of tea and sighed. The caseworker then looked at Lily "Are you going to be okay here if I head back to my office?" she asked . Lily nodded softly and soon the caseworker said her good byes and that she would be back in a few days. She then left. Lily sat and nibbled on some more sandwiches and sipped some more tea. Soon Alfred came back in to be with the girl so Kate could check on her guest. Nightwing had puled up a file on the batcomputer of Jonathan Crane Aka Scarecrow. He read through the file sitting there his eyee shooting from left to right as he read it carefully rubbing his chin as he did so

Kate rubbed the girl's back gently for a second. "I have to go check on something. But I'll be back as soon as I can, and then maybe we can talk about our favorite superheroes." With Alfred watching Lily, Kate went down to the Batcave to join Nightwing. She came up behind him in the main computer room, folding her arms. "Nightwing. To what do I owe the surprise? You'd have no way of knowing this, but it's not a great time for me. It's my first day with the girl I adopted. Did you need me for something, or is this just surveillance as usual?"

Nightwing noticed Kate behind him and didnt turned his head as he spoke "Jonathan Crane escaped Arkham last night. One of his followers broke him out. There were also a few other escapees including Waylon Jones and Pamela Isley" he said "I'm trying to figure out the connection between them. WHo would break them out and why?" he asked "Now theres a Killer Croc on the loose and two other really evil people. Hm...." he said as he pulled up the other two villains files. "So you gotta kid eh? Does that mena youre getting a new sidekick?" he asked smirking softly. He then turned and looked at her "You know I wouldnt push her into it if I were you. Bruce never forced me to do it but I wanted to do it by my own will" he said nodding.

Kate shook her head. "God, what's the point of putting them in Arkham to begin with then? It seems like every month, some prisoner escapes. Wouldn't it be safer for Gotham if we dealt with Batman's little rogues' gallery once and for all? After all the terrible crimes they've committed, it seems foolish of us to keep showing them mercy like they'll ever be rehabilitated. But I know that isn't how Bruce would have handled things, and I know that isn't what he taught all of you..."
She decided to let the subject drop in the interest of not getting into it with Nightwing. Kate and Bruce never saw eye-to-eye about how to handle villains. "'Gotta kid' is a weird way to say adopted an orphan, Richard. Although, with how many random kids Bruce brought home, it may just be what you're accustomed to. And who said anything about a sidekick? I'm not Bruce. Lily's not going to be my Robin. Kids that young have no business fighting crime. If you want proof, look no further than Jason Todd."
