Nightly Lessons Book I: The Book of Beginnings

[Peeker]

Janus froze.

Crap!

...at least he didn't say it - he'd had enough of that toothbrush for the night... or the century, to be honest.

The website was immediately closed, and Janus turned in his chair, opening the book on his lap. He began to read feverishly. ...maybe he should ask Mikeal for more time?

No... he'd already disappointed the man with a dirty mouth once today... he didn't want him to think he was a slacker....

The boy read as best and as quickly as he could. He could take notes on it on his own time.

The thirty mintues ticked by quickly to both of the working vampires. Perhapse it was quicker then Janus would have have liked. Once Mikeal sealed his second letter, Mikeal looked up and noted the clock.

"Janus!" He called. "Janus come on into the kitchen please."

There was a minute or two where Janus didn't show.

"Janus, come on bro," Mikeal called again. "It's only 20 pages. Nothing to panic over."

[Peeker]

Janus closed the book, and hurried into the kitchen.

It certainly was twenty pages... he'd just demolished them. He rubbed his eyes as he came into the room. He just hoped he remembered all of it.

Can't let him down... not for doing something stupid, that's just going to get your computer taken away...

Janus had grown a little paranoid about his possessions: after having nothing with Razziel, having anything, much less something so cool as the things Mikeal had given him, still felt unbelievable. The last thing he wanted was to lose them....

Actually, the last thing he wanted was to deserve to lose them.

Mikeal watched Janus trotte into the kitchen and taking a seat across Mikeal. Mikeal smiled kindly and passed him a small test with fifteen multiply choise on it.

"Take you're time Janus," Mikeal smiled. "I'll check them once you're done."

[Peeker]

"Yessir...."

So Janus took his time. As he filled in the questions - both the ones he knew and didn't, (he'd always liked multiple choice) - he was distracted by his thoughts, picturing Mikeal yelling at him for slacking off...

No. That wouldn't happen. Not like that, anyway... In the boy's head, the scene quickly shrank down until Mikeal was a huge animated angry head... and finding himself still able to smile, now, Janus pushed the paper back to his sire.

"I think I'm done..." A pause. "I had to rush a little. I lost track of time before I started reading..." He flushed a little, ashamed. He'd said it: too late to go back, now. "...sorry."

"I think I'm done..."

"That's wonderful Janus," Mikeal stopped in his third letter, one that was a little longer then the first two because the vampire lived in the middle of a heavily mortal populated area. "If you can just wait a moment..."

"I had to rush a little. I lost track of time before I started reading..." Mikeal looked up and blinked surpised as he saw Janus' ears reddened with embarassment and a little self disappointment. "...sorry."

"Rush? Janus..." Mikeal was a little disappointed in Janus, it was only twenty pages, but he was happy the boy was being honest. "Why didn't you just ask for some more time? I wouldn't have been mad, Janus."

He looked down at the paper and flicked he hand over it to mark which of the questions were wrong. He grimaced inside when he saw most were wrong.

"Even Alice takes her time with history," He flipped the paper over so Janus couldn't see it. "It's only fair that you can do that too. Now then, what distracted you?"

[Peeker]

"I took my five minutes off like you said..." Janus felt the pit in his stomach growing: here it was. The laptop was going to be smashed into a million pieces. The boy stared intently at the piece of paper, wishing he had x-ray vision.

"I was looking at some swords online... it was this really cool site full of them... but... I got a little distracted." Panic crept into the boy's eyes. "I had my book on my lap and everything. I didn't forget about my work... I... just lost track of time..."

Mikeal sat for a moment and thought about it. By principle he should have taken the lap top away but it was clear he was sorry.

"Hmmmm... I see..." He folded his hands and looked at Janus, thinking about the best way to handle the situation. "Janus... you really should have started earlier and you should have asked for more time."

He flipped the paper over so Janus could see the marks.

"You did very poorly on the section Janus," He sighed lightly. "Janus... I'm afraid I'm going to have to have you reread the sections and take the computer away from the day."

[Peeker]

For the day? Janus sighed in relief. Losing it for the next ten hours or so was much better than for the rest of his life.

...he'd have to make it up to Mikeal, somehow.

"I'm sorry, Sire..." The boy said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I..." he trailed off, looking at his test. Wow. What a mess! "...may I reread this now? Or... can... can I do something else for you?" He frowned a little. "I'm sorry about the section... it.. it won't happen again."

Mikeal nodded but looked at Janus pointedly.

"It had better not, Janus," He said. "Because your studies are more important then your computer. Next time it will be a spank and a session with the brush. Understood?"

Mikeal could be a softy at times, much like Aleks, but he was strict as well. He wasn't about to let Janus think it was completely okay to miss out on his studies because of a website.

"Now then, hop along and do your history. I need to finish this before I get your computer," Mikeal turned back to his final letter. "If you could turn it off for me that would be nice and no playing about on it, understand? Thank you Janus."
