It was nearly dusk, and, just above the treetops in the thickly forested area in which 12 year old Marianna and her neighbors lived, the horizon was turning lavender. She stood at the hedge of the lawn that surrounded her little brick house, hoping to see her younger brother. Where WAS he? She'd sent him into town - which wasn't far - to get a jug of milk, and he hadn't returned yet. She was beginning to worry. This area wasn't usually dangerous, but anything might have happened.

The 10 year old boy carried the jug of milk on his shoulders inside his bookbag, both straps around his shoulders vertically. He was dressed in a white polo shirt and some caqui's from his school uniform. Marianna had requested him to go get milk before he even had a chance to go play with his friends. He was frustrated about that particular detail. "Why can't she go herself? Always sending me instead." he complained as he lazily dragged his feet up the dusty trail.

His sneakers covered in dust, which he would probably have t ok wash later on. He still had homework and other things to do. Speaking of which his brown eyes gazed upon his sister as she looked down the path with that worried look on her face. His caramel colored skin had a slight shade of red.

Just as Marianna had been preparing to set out and look for him, Sean appeared, and she fairly sagged with relief.
"Sean, it's almost dark! What took you so long?"
She was a pretty girl, of medium build, with dust-colored, rosy-hued skin, large hazel eyes, and dark curls as soft as clouds.

Sean heard her distressed tone that demanded an answer. *Goodness she's annoying!* He thought to himself as he thought of a reply. "I took my time.. had you gone yourself it would have been faster" Sean had little curls in his brown wavy hair, he was a medium build, and a little shorter than his older sister. He grabbed the gate and unlocked it with his fingers as it creaked while it opened completely allowing him to take the first few steps by into their little home. "Is dinner ready yet?" he argued back as his stomach growled as he removed the straps and allowed his bookbag to touch the ground next to him. Gently laying it on the dirt path

"No, it's not! I had to stay here to make the stew and wash our clothes, Sean, but if YOU hadn't taken so long just for the sake of being a pain, the mashed potatoes would be ready by now!"
Marianna snatched the milk.

Sean did not give her a single a reply, just a glare and annoyed hmmph! He hated this life and what had become of them, how he envied his friends and their families it angered him, not having someone to rely one like a mom or dad just Marianna and him depending on one another. The orange glow of the sun was fading as time was progressing and the darkness of night loomed over the atmosphere. As the cold evening breeze blew by the trees and soft clapping of leaves filled the air. That same cold breeze gave Sean chills as he stood there and suddenly sneezed. Wiping his snot away with his forearm as he walked behind Marianna and opened the door for her. Not saying a word. He wasn't upset he was just being quiet.

Marianna stifled a sigh. As she stepped into the house, where warmth, mingled with the aroma of stew, filled it from corner to corner, she handed her younger brother a handkerchief. The pleasant heat caressed their skin, giving them a sort of tingle as it overcame the chill.
"Sean, what am I going to do with you? I know things are hard, little brother, but can't you even try to work with me? We'll never make it to eighteen if we dont work together. I was worried to death about you!" She groaned. "And now I'm starving!"

Sean grabbed the handkerchief with his free hand, and wiped his nose. He did not want to start ranting about how hard things are for them as it is. Having to put in so much work to run this little home as if they were the mother and father. It was a strange analogy Sean had come up to try and explain their circumstances. His friends said it was awesome for him to be alone. But the reality, the loneliness, lack of family love and wholesomeness painted a very grim picture for him. Something that he could not explain into words but he definitely felt.

He truly does want to work with his sister, but sometimes just sometimes he wished things were different and it was those things that made him upset enough to cry. He had to bottle things up for now. He sighed as he went ahead to help wash dishes and set the table for them.

Marianna could see that nothing would come of scolding her little brother any further. Instead, she poured him a mug of milk and handed him the last cookie they had. She then put the newly bought milk on to warm up and got to work mashing the potatoes.
"I put dumplings in the stew. I know you like those," was her attempt at making conversation. "So, anything great happen today?" She knew that nothing extraordinary had happened for her. She'd studied from the library books she'd borrowed, as she'd dropped out of school a year ago. She'd fought with arithmetic till she was despondent and close to tears. She'd sold vegetables from the garden, then had done some babysitting in town.

Sean did not reply as she gave him the past cookie they had. Thinking of how to answer her question, he moved his fingers carefully grasping the cookie, pressing his fingers and adding pressure to force the cookie to crack in between, taking both cookies he measured them and gave her the bigger half of the two and place it on the counter by her. Looking over the glass of milk not wanting to drink it. He absolutely avoided plain milk as much as possible.

"School was okay, I spent my day... flipping girls skirts and running away" he chuckled at the thought of his mischuveous habit that boys at school had going on. It was not Sean's character to be doing something like this but fitting in meant everything to him, feeling like he belonged was a driving force.

Sean waited for his sister's reaction before continuing. Feeling the subtle warmth from the stew and the smell made the boy happy. It was not going to be a rough night after all. "I did my homework, it is easy for me, I hate English class but other than that I am okay.."
