Runaways (A story for Bombay)
Aria sat on the good side of the broken bench that looked out at Coopers Lake and watched the last of Leroy's car slip into the dark murky water. Leroy was not inside so Aria did not need to feel guilty as she watched his beat up Yaris get swallowed up by the water. Getting the car in the lake had been easier than she thought. With any luck it would take a few days before anyone realized it was down there and it would take even longer to figure out that nobody was down in the murky depths with the car. Its not like Leroy was going to report the car stolen, he had too many warrants out for his arrest to mess with that.
"Goodbye Leroy!" Aria called out and hopped off the bench. She pulled down the black hoodie to cover more of her bare legs. The night had gotten chilly and Aria was reconsidering her outfit for the great escape. She had jeans in her pack but she figure you could move more freely in the shorts. Oh well too late to change now.
She had a three step plan to the great escape and the car had been step number two. Having already slipped some pills into Leroys beer she now only had one more step. It was time to rescue her bestie!
Avoiding the working streetlights, Aria slinked her way back into the trailer park until she found the worn down trailer in lot 13. Inside was Aria's best friend and her lame parents. Dim light came out from the living room but it was unclear if anyone was awake. Carefully she slipped to the back of the trailer to the one window that Hannah had in her room. The window was partly busted and thus could not fully lock. Aria had snuck in plenty of times before so it was not difficult. She left her bulky backpack leaning on the trailer and like some sort of modern day ninja crawled into her room.
Hannah was sleeping on her tummy, Aria knew why. The whole trailer park had heard her step dad tear into her earlier. He had beat her bad and nobody was willing to do anything. Well nobody except Aria. Once she saw that redneck oath dragging Hannah back to the trailer for the some BS that was not even her fault she knew that tonight was the night.
With the most gentle nudge that she could manage she shook her little friend and made sure she could see that it was her. Aria's freckled face was putting a finger to her lips when Hannah opened her eyes.
