"Alice...these don't look like good work tendencies to me. You're second guessing too much, and wasting far too much time on each question, and this on a quiz full of things you should already know. I have no doubt that you are bright enough to ace this work but you need to believe a bit more in yourself for it to happen." Lyall told her sternly as he watched how long she took on the next question.

Alice blushed slightly and looked down, chewing on his lip. "Sorry sir... I just like to be sure..." She said softly as she turned blue eyes to look at him. She could probably have had the test done in under half the class... But she had a tendensy to not trust herself.

Lyall let out a small sigh as he watched her, he knew when he met her she was shy but not to this extent. "Being sure is one thing Alice, but it's another thing altogether to take twice as much time as necessary on a question due to indecisiveness." Lyall then pointed to the last question on the quiz, one still unanswered by her. "I want you to go ahead and solve this problem Alice, only once though. Let me see what you get after you find your first answer."

"Sorry" Alice whispered as she continued to blush. She looked down at the last question, and used about half a minute to answer it before holding the paper out of Lyall. The answer was of course correct like every other question on the quiz, but she didn't feel completely comfident about it. How could she after looking it over only one time? And she hadn't written much on that one either... It was another one of the things she did. If a question needed a answer around one sentence, she would probably end up writing a whole page just to make sure she got everything.

Lyall looked over the paper with an approving nod before sitting it back down and looking to Alice. "This answer is entirely correct Alice. See how much faster that was? You're second guessing yourself too much, and thinking into the problems far more than you should. Which would be fine if you were being assigned to write a detailed report, but you're really hurting yourself more than anything else on assignments like this. I mean just look right here, this was a short quiz yet you took all class and still didn't finish it until now." Lyall paused for a moment, unsure on how best to get through to her. It was obvious she needed to learn to have more confidence in herself but he wasn't entirely sure how to go about doing it. Finally he continued after a few seconds, "Alice you are a bright girl, I can tell that. You need to have more confidence in your answers, and be more aware of when more work is required or not. I want you to promise me that you will work on this, understand?"

Alice continued to blush and gave a small nod. She knew she was second guessing herself a lot, and she knew it wasn't good but... If she didn't, how could she be sure she got it right? What if she forgot something? She gave a small nod though. "Yes sir" She told him softly, though she wasn't sure if she was lying or not. She didn't really want to stop her work method. It was what she was used to, what made her feel safe. It seemed to be what the man wanted to hear though, so that was what she would tell him. She didn't want to make her new teacher angry after all, especially not for such a small thing.

By her tone Lyall wasn't sure whether she meant her promise or whether she was only promising in order to stay out of trouble, but he accepted it nonetheless. He gave her a gentle smile and patted her should before turning around and heading back to his desk. "Alright then, you may go Alice, and I expect you to not spend an entire class second guessing yourself next time. Oh and don't forget, there's no homework from this class tonight so you won't have to worry about that. You just be sure and actually sleep tonight." Lyall told her as he allowed her to get her things and leave. Although he had forgotten to remind her of the homework he HAD assigned in the earlier class, an assignment Alice probably hadn't even heard since she wasn't paying attention at the time.

Alice nodded and stood up, grabbing her stuff before going out of the classroom and heading home. She hadn't heard anything about homework in her first class, so the thought of there being any never even entered her mind.
She did get some sleep that night like her teacher had told her to, making her much more aware and awake when she arrived for school the next day. She had Lyall in her first class this day too, and just like yesterday she went to sit in the far back, prefering to be as invisible as possible.

The next day started out much the same a the prior one. Lyall arrived at the school, albeit still too early for his tastes, and headed into the classroom to prepare for the days lesson. Eventually the students arrived as well and he greeted them normally, except for Alice whom he gave a gentle smile as she entered the classroom. Lyall wasn't playing favorites, although he believed Alice was more...interesting than the other students, he was simply attempting to find a way to increase her confidence in herself by being polite.
Once the last student arrived and the bell rung Lyall began the class, just as he had done yesterday. "Good morning class, I hope your first day of school wasn't too taxing on you. Now settle down and lets get started. I would like all of you to pass up the homework from last night." Lyall said as he watched the students begin to dig around to find it then start to pass it up.

Alice gave the teacher a small smile back, somehow the man's smile made her just a little less nervous about everything. She sat down at the same desk as last time. Then, Lyall mentioned homework from last night. But... It hadn't been any homework, had it? He had even told her when she was leaving math class... Oh. Of course. Not math homework, it was homework from this class, and she hadn't done it because she hadn't known about it, because she hadn't been paying attention. She looked down and blushed, biting her lip as she sat there in silence. She only hoped he wouldn't say anything about it until after class, she didn't like howing much attention on herself. That was probably a underestimation... She hated it.
