Was this with which browser? What sort of application... was it something that was opening only when visiting the site?

Never,
ever, ever switch of anti-virus software or firewalls.
That's like going to a train station, getting on a crowded train to the airport for an hour, queing with hundreds of people for check-in and security and getting on a thirty-hour stopping flight to the far side of the world... after switching off your immune system.
If somethings being blocked by security systems, its probably for good reason.
Check the updates on all the programs and add-ons your browser uses (as old versions can easily be commonly comprimised), update your AV, update your browser and 99% of errors are solved as a genuine vulnerability has been fixed.
