A Step Too Far

"I don't know what that is," Crevan said quietly when ROy mentioned something that he had watched when he was a kid. "I've never seen one either," he added when Roy mentioned that he hadn't seen one in real life, the kid having only ever seen the more common birds that most people had in their yards.

"It's an old video collection thingy...I haven't seen it for years but pretty sure people don't make VCR's anymore." Roy answered and nodded when Crevan said he hadn't seen one either, and he was pretty sure that was the case with most people since they weren't exactly common birds.

"I'm not sure what people do or don't watch, just know I've never heard of it," he said quietly when Roy told him that it was old. After that they went on to talk about the kestrel a bit, Crevan keeping his blue eyes focused on the bird though he was listening to anything that Roy might have to say to him, he just didn't have much to contribute himself.

"Ah, well that would explain it." Roy answered and looked at the kid, wondering what was going through his mind as they focused on the bird. He read the little panel and then moved on to the next one, which happened to be parakeets. "Oh I like these ones."

Crevan looked around as his guardian moved on to the next exhibit and he smiled a bit when he saw the parakeets. "You can teach them to talk," he said when Roy said that he liked them, the kid's blue eyes focused on the little birds. "Not as much as the larger parrots but they can do it, lots of people just teach them to whistle familiar tunes though," the kid added.

Roy nodded his head in response to his boy saying that they could be taught to speak. "They sure can." he smiled, "Hello." he said to the birds, over and over, and he grinned when the parakeet talked back to them. "Ah, friendly things, eh?" he chuckled, and then looked over as he noticed the ice cream truck. "Oh, come on kiddo, let's get an ice cream."

Crevan listened as Roy spoke to the boy over and over, thinking to himself that he'd tire of the repetitiveness long before he ever managed to teach a bird to speak. He didn't say that out loud however and instead just let the man have his fun, nodding his head slightly when Roy mentioned ice cream. "Okay," he said quietly, agreeing to that easily enough but then again that wasn't the sort of thing that most kids would argue against.

"Come on then lad." Roy smiled, reaching up and gently lifting Crevan off of his shoulders so that they could walk over and get ice cream together. "I think I might get a white magnum, I always liked those...and I love white chocolate." he grinned, looking at his son-to-be and putting a hand on his shoulder, "What would you like, kiddo?" he asked gently.

"You know I've always thought it strange that they call it white chocolate but it isn't really chocolate at all," Crevan said quietly when Roy said what it was that he was going to get and added that he had a fondness for white chocolate. When asked what it was that he'd like Crevan replied softly, "Just vanilla is fine, please." He knew that it was the cheaper of the options that were available and since he didn't think that he really deserved a treat in the first place that was what he went with.

"No, it's more like sugar sweet things, but I still like it." Roy smiled when Crevan said he thought it was strange that they called it white chocolate. "Alright, one vanilla." he answered, paying for both the ice creams, which came to about five dollars for the both. He handed his kid the vanilla one, and opened his own. "Mhm, love me some white chocolate." he laughed. "You can have something from the gift shop, If you want pal."
