I don't see what me having mods clean up my gallery has to do with anything other than being a snipe for the sake of making a snipe. Classy.

I'd argue that allowing anything and then challenging people to create something original with already over-done series would make for a better mental excercise than simply picking an obscure series and then drawing characters from that. Novelty for the sake of novelty is just as lazy as sticking with the mainstream.

And Rob, I never had any intention of entering this contest, especially since you always include language in your contests' rules that makes me think you're more interested in mining material for the site instead of providing a fun distraction for entrants. At any rate, I've said my piece and since my point isn't to rant and rage I'll leave things be with this post.

I think excluding characters that are extremely well-known by almost everyone (Mario, Sonic, Lara Croft, Chun-Li, Ash...) is a good idea. They've been illustrated a lot and still will be in the future. While it's quite possible to make good and interesting pics using them, it would be refreshing to see only characters who aren't quite so iconic.

It's just my opinion, but maybe the contest should only frown upon those few dozens of über-known characters and nothing else. Even little-known characters from highly famous and recent games could perhaps be allowed. While Portal is quite famous, I haven't seen a lot of Chell Johnson fanart. Limiting the limitation to characters that are so well-known even people who haven't played the game know who they are would make things clearer for the artists, leave them a lot of liberty and yet ensure a good measure of originality.

Hey I know where Rob is coming from. I understand what he is trying to say and I think it is a good idea.

Sadly though I found out I have somethings that require my immediate attention and the time I thought I would have for this contest, looks like it was eaten up. maybe the next one. I look forward to seeing everyone's entry's though.

Argh, damn, I had a link to an entire thread of portal jokes on 4chan archives - looks like they've rearranged a few of the thread IDs and the link now points to something else. It wasn't exactly art featuring Michelle, it was more mechanics stuff for portal with a few bottom slappings verging on spanking.
I've seen some other spanking pics too. Maybe I'm just wider travelled.

The point of the suggstions I made and the neo-ruling is to avoid stuff thats just been done before... competitions like these can easily be one by the best artist every time, by making it a mechanics and scenario driven spanking and avoiding cliches it gives lesser artists a more reasonably playing field. CM_Zero would storm it again, I'm sure, if the contest is "Draw the best Sonic!!!!1one1eleven" but hopefully by reducing the concept that it has to be about characters and celebrities (and cliche's) I was intending to see more mechanics and clever ideas coming through.

As I've said many times, if people have a brainwave and want to risk it by going for something well known and obvious then they can. I'll tell you what I AM tempted by though - and this should be an adequate reason to do no portal.

I'm SO TEMPTED in the 4chan style to make the autumn competition "Fun with Portals."
I was going to make it books, but that'd be a good one for christmas too.
