I used a Wacom Bamboo for about a year, then upgraded to Intuos4. Bamboo was ok to get used to the feel of a tablet as opposed to the mouse, but took may be five drawings to realize its shortcomings in terms of sensitivity (512 pressure levels VS 2048 on Intuos4).
From what I heard and from experience so far, it's better not to go below 1024 pressure levels. More expensive tablets are also tilt responsive, which is very enjoyable and adds the "natural" feel to it.
Not to sound like a Wacom advertisement, but I'd say Intous was way worth every penny spent on it. Unfortunately I can't compare to other manufacturers, so here's some some Wacom info:
Tablets develop pretty quickly, so the current model of Bamboo pen+touch has 1024 levels (no tilt). For some reason Bamboo pen (without hand touch) is still at 512.
Intous4 has 2048 levels and 60 degree tilt response. Prices vary quite a bit depending on size; I'm using a small one and am happy with it for the time being (from both hardware and arts points of view), wonder if this size difference really worth so much (anyone knows?); since the resolution doesn't change, you can probably compensate by zooming in and out...
Anyways, hope that helps
