Thomas David "Davey" Jones
Name: Thomas David "Davey" Jones
(Usually only called Thomas by teachers on the first day of classes)
Age: 10
Birthday: March 2nd
Race: Human
Height: 4' 5"
Weight: 60
Hair: Black
Eyes: Gray
Appearance: Davey is short and thin for his age. He has always been slender but the recent stress in his life hasn't helped his appetite either. Given the choice he prefers to wear flip-flops instead of shoes. But while he likes to dress down in footwear he prefers button up shirts to t-shirts and even tried to learn to tie a bow-tie in order to dress up as his favorite educational Science Guy on tv.
History: Davey's old neighbors thought his parents were simply more interested in their jobs than their child. He usually saw them at breakfast before heading to school then spent the afternoon and often evenings with a retired neighbor couple waiting for his parents to come home. More days than not he ate dinner with the elderly kitsune-jin couple, spent more time working on homework while they watched than at home with his parents, and spent his last four birthdays with the neighbors rather than at home.
Then came the day he arrived on his street after school to find the neighbor couple and a police office waiting for him. It might have been easier on him if his parents had died, instead the officer explained to him that his parents had been arrested and it might be a long time before he saw them again. When the officer asked if he had any relatives he could be sent to Davey simply shook his head. He thought he might have an uncle in California, but he had never been to visit any relatives. The neighbor couple offered to continue watching after him until relatives could be found.
If Davey thought it was awkward when his classmates heard that both his parents had been arrested he found it worse when the charges were revealed to be espionage. Overnight he went from light teasing by his classmates to being snubbed. Each day was a constant stream of incidents from being tripped and books knocked from his hands to a refusal by any any classmate to voluntarily work with him.
The authorities spent weeks digging through records but found that Davey had no relatives living in Erehwon and none of the close family members located outside the country were willing to take him. Then the husband of the couple watching him suffered a stroke and reluctantly the couple agreed that they would not be able to keep up with a growing boy. Leaving was bittersweet, Davey was relieved to escape his former friends but depressed by the cost of that escape.
Personality: Before everything came crashing around him Davey he was already considered a bit shy. Given a group project he would pull his weight and help however he could and was then willing to let others take most of the credit. When he wasn't being quiet it was usually because he was doing something to cheer up a classmate who was having a bad day. Then came the shunning and something gave. While he only got caught in one physical fight, he was written up several times for shouting back in response to slights in class and for failing to complete or turn in many of his assignments. Twice he was caught trying to sneak off campus to escape from the treatment he was receiving. Even as he got in trouble he wouldn't make any official complaints, convinced nothing would be done about it. He's hopeful things will change now, but not quiet ready to believe it really will and dreads the moment someone realizes his parents were the ones on the news and in the papers for selling information to other countries.
School: Davey was a rather average student. A few As, more Bs, some Cs, and only the occasional worse grade. Despite his physical appearance Physical Education is actually one of his better classes. He's doing well with math now but is worried. He knows any field of science will require math and when he tried reading up on algebra and trigonometry in the library and it quickly got confusing.
Interests/Hobbies:
- Sky watching, day or night. He enjoys watching the clouds and imagining what each might be and loves when he gets to look at the stars and planets through a telescope (even if he can identify few things in the night sky other than the moon, the big dipper, and Orion).
- Davey knows how to make chocolate chip cookies, can make a few simple pasta dishes, and even knows how to make real gravy from drippings and roux. He hasn't done any of these unsupervised but did often help in the kitchen in the last year.
- He's wanted to learn to play the guitar but couldn't talk his parents into letting him sign up for classes and the neighbor couple didn't have one.
Miscellaneous:
- Distrustful of neko-jin. A neko-jin boy in his class started the teasing and it was another who started the fight he got caught in.
- The couple who had watched him made sure he knew they were not upset with him and asked him to write and keep them up to date on how he is doing. (Before I forget their names, Michael and Emiko Kinsley)
- Unless specifically told to actually take a bath Davey will take what some might call a navy or military shower. Turning on the water for a short time, turning it off while soaping up, then turning on the water to rinse off. He doesn't know either of those names, it's simply how he was taught to take showers. Baths as far as Davey is concerned are for babies and people who are sick.
Relationships:
Davey spent most of his first week hiding in his room as much as he could. But he could only hide so long and eventually came out of hiding in time to help sort through Halloween decorations. Since then he's still mostly been quiet, but at least been quiet outside of his room in the vicinity of others.
School: It's school. He hasn't made any effort to make any friends but is a little happier having escaped the rejection he faced at his old school.
Tempo: Davey has decided that Tempo cool. How could he not think that a kid who knows how to make candy is cool? And Tempo shared the kitten Porcelet with him. When Davey spots Tempo he's likely to find an excuse to hang out nearby.
Jeremy: Jeremy's a nice kid. How he can think that Meph is a fun guy has Davey a bit puzzled, that guy spanks! Then again Jeremy gave the unwelcome news that the rule book really truly means what it says about the possibility of spankings. But he's glad to hear the boy's found a new mom as awesome as he makes Lisa sound.
Andy: Meeting Andy and James on his arrival at the house Davey started off thinking of both of them as The Guys In Charge. People he needed to be a bit wary of and make sure not to annoy. After helping sort through Halloween decorations he now thinks of Andy as The Funny In-Charge Guy.
James: Davey now thinks of James as, The Funny But Stern Guy. James it seems can put enough warning in his voice to catch Davey's attention. Still, what's so wrong with pointing out the idiocy of someone who would stick bacon in the toaster's bread slot?
Maggie: Maggie's left him a little conflicted. It appears she likes to snuggle and he actually kind of liked the safe feeling it gave him. At the same time hugs and snuggles are just for little kids, right? At least he doesn't remember anything like that since he was younger.
Meph: Meph has also left him feeling conflicted. The first to give him a spanking, it's not too surprising he might feel a wary around him now. Leave it to one of the neko's to hear him wandering around in the middle of the night. (Fortunately for him that he's not put it in those words out loud) He's not sure he agrees with Meph's definition of a light spanking, but he hasn't had many in his life to compare it too. But once it was over Meph stuck around to comfort him which Davey wasn't expecting.
