Sadie smiled. "Well that's good..." After ten minutes or so, her bottom was still sore but she could hardly feel it as her skin was now numb. She then helped Marilyn with her school work, as she quickly finished her own.

As the schoolwork showed, Marilyn was indeed slowly getting better, which both girls were proud of. Instead of low C's, she was getting low-to-middle B's, which Bernard would likely be very, very proud of as well. However, Marilyn decided she wanted to tell him about the boost in her grades the next night at dinner.

That is, until the governess ruined that day by calling her up out of her seat during hers and Sadie's lessons a few days later.

Mrs. MacBain eyed Marilyn as she walked up, looking stern through her glasses. "Marilyn, while your marks have been improving, I don't think that you have reached your full potential..."

"May I say something?" Sadie raised her hand, then lowered it, not waiting for permission to speak. "Marilyn has been trying very very hard. I help her study a few hours at least every day, sometimes more. She is really trying."

"Well, her efforts have not yielded much."

"For Marilyn, it is a lot. As her teacher you should know--"

"Sadie! Enough of the interrupting!" She glared at Sadie, then looked back at Marilyn. "I want you to bend over my desk and lift up your dress, Marilyn. I warned you of the punishment you would receive if your grades did not improve as much as I'd like to see."
