Down in the schoolroom, poor Marilyn felt like her bottom was on fire from the ruler, which the governess was still laying hard across her bottom.

Mr. Lawrence did not look pleased. In fact, the stern look he was giving the governess was one he usually reserved for the girls when they were at their naughtiest. "Might I ask why Marilyn may have needed to been spanked with the ruler?"

Mrs. MacBain cleared her throat and set the ruler down nervously. She was caught. There was no way she could hide her lie any longer from Marilyn. "Well, you see Mr. Lawrence, I feel that Marilyn has been lacking the proper motivation. Her marks aren't anywhere near Sadie's, and yet she claims that she spends a lot of her time studying. I was merely giving her an incentive, that, and the fact that she was very defiant and refused punishment."

Mr. Lawrence's glare grew further. "Marilyn and Sadie have different academic abilities. You, as a tutor and a governess, ought to know that well enough. And while Marilyn does not make the same grades as Sadie does, I know very well that she is working very hard to make her former grades better... Is that not right, Marilyn?"

Over the desk, the blonde nodded. "Uh-huh...! I-I made a 88 on... on my last test..." Which, before, was practically unheard of for poor Marilyn.

"Well, I suppose you're right," she admitted, though it was mostly in hopes of defusing the situation. "Marilyn, you've been punished enough. You may pull up your undergarments and stand." As she did, Mrs. MacBain tried to gain her composure. "If you could call Sadie back, we can continue their lessons, thank you, Mr. Lawrence."

As Marilyn began to right her clothes, brushing her hand against her face, Mr. Lawrence began to speak,

"No, Mrs. MacBain, they will not return to you this afternoon. They will continue their lessons with me, in my study, and you shall leave for the day, and not return. I will not have a governess who will abuse her station and harm either Marilyn or Sadie. You're fired."

Mrs. MacBain's eyes grew wide. "Mr. Lawrence, you can't be serious! After all the work I've done..." But his stern, silent gaze proved that arguing was pointless. Silently, she went to her desk and collected her things, slamming the drawers as she went. She didn't have much so it only took a couple of minutes, but it was clear in her face that she was thoroughly embarrassed. After giving a devilish glare to Marilyn, she brushed past Mr. Lawrence, muttering under her breath, "Good luck with the stupid girl!"

The door slammed, leaving Bernard and his young sniffling ward alone.
