Before Sadie could apologize as well, Charlotte stopped her. "I don't want to hear it right now. Though you both don't have to worry. I'm not going to tell Mr. Lawrence."

"You...you aren't?" meeped Sadie.

"He told me about your previous governess, how cruel she was. And since you two don't seem the types of children to do this sort of thing all of the time, I can only assume it was to run me off. That does not excuse your behavior in the slightest," she said, pointing a finger at them, "but I can only imagine how livid he would be to know what the two of you had done. I also know that you two probably couldn't bear his disappointment."

Marilyn could feel herself squirming where she stood. She felt terrible, and almost on the verge of crying. Mr. Lawrence would be beyond livid, so she was certainly kind by showing them mercy and allowing them to live another day.

Sadie felt the same as Marilyn, and she wrung her hands as she looked at the floor.

"So, we will handle this matter just between us, and you know what that entails. I told you what punishments you would receive when we first met, and I plan to follow through. Now, it is late. I don't plan to wake everyone in the house just to punish you two. Get some sleep and we'll talk about this more in the morning." She turned to leave, then stopped. "How many spiders exactly were there?"

Sadie didn't want to say, but at this point she couldn't bear to lie. "....Ten."

Charlotte's eyes widened. "Wonderful. Good night, ladies." She walked out of the room and back into own. Within moments they could hear her getting to work on killing all of them.

Marilyn sighed as she got on the bed. "Oh, Sadie, this is terrible! A spanking with a hairbrush!... but we do deserve it, don't we...?"

In the morning, the two girls awoke to the sound of knocking at their door. "Girls, I'm going to come in," came Charlotte's voice from the door. The door slowly opened, then closed behind their governess. In her hand was a heavy wooden hairbrush. "Good morning, ladies."

"....Morning," Sadie said as she sat up, rubbing her eyes.

"I've informed Mr. Lawrence that you two will be eating breakfast later without him so that we may discuss the events of last night."
