Sadie nodded, and carefully got off the bed and began to get dressed. As she did, she winced every time a piece of cloth rubbed against her bottom.

Marilyn, too was quite sore, and she sniffled the whole time she got dressed, then the two girls headed downstairs quietly. Breakfast was peaceful, and Mr. Lawrence thankfully didn't ask any questions about why the girls were teary-eyed or squirming in their chairs. They behaved very well for Miss Charlotte over the next two weeks, to the point where their governess allowed them to call her Miss Lottie.

However, all good things had to come to an end. Their studies got harder, since both girls wanted to go to university, and Marilyn didn't enjoy her work. It was too hard, and she knew she wasn't as good as Sadie about it. So, when Sadie headed breakfast one day, without Marilyn, when Mr. Lawrence asked where she was, she told them that she was sick. Because that's what Marilyn told her, even though she wasn't sick at all.

"Oh, dear," Lottie said, worried. She held a hand up when Bernard stood. "Don't worry, Mr. Lawrence, finish your breakfast." She dabbed her mouth with a napkin, then excused herself and went up to Marilyn's room. She knocked on the door gently and entered when Marilyn told her to come in. "Marilyn, sweetheart, Sadie told me you weren't feeling well today?" She walked over and sat on her bed.
