Sadie shifted nervously in her seat. "I...I wanted to talk to you about my grades." When she saw Bernard's look, she added quickly, "Don't worry! I'm not failing anything! It's just that...I've been really homesick, especially lately, and I don't think that I'm doing as well as I should. My dorm mother took Marilyn's letter away until we see my final grades, and she makes sure we all do our studies and everything but..." she trailed off.

Mr. Lawrence nodded. "You do realize, that if your grades aren't very well, then you won't get your scholarship, Sadie." At her nod, he sighed and said, "Thank you very much for telling me this. I want you to go to the study, and go to your corner."

Sadie nodded and stood slowly. This is what she hoped for, and the thought of it made her feel weird. Who would want a punishment spanking? Well...she would. She needed to do her best in school, and she knew it. She left the table and went to his study and placed herself in the corner.

Mr. Lawrence came in a few minutes later, carrying the ruler from the schoolroom. "Sadie, you know very well how important your grades are, and that you need to keep them up, for more than one reason." His voice was more gentle when he spoke again: "If you ever feel homesick, you're more than welcome to come for the weekend, or you can always call Marilyn or I."

Sadie nodded, still facing the corner. "I just...wanted to be like an adult...I wanted to be responsible, and not miss you all so much..." Her voice choked a bit. "I didn't want to let you down...I need to do my best..."
