"No, I have not built a bridge before, but from reading that book, I can tell you that it is a bad idea to transport stone across the bridge you are going to use it for. SO that's one thing gained."

"Aren't you supposed to have engineers for that sort of thing?" Fabiana asked as she sat down in a chair on the far side of the room. "Besides, I already told you. One must not always hold their tongues for fear of offending or nothing would ever get done." She knew she was pushing her husband-to-be a little bit, but it seemed fun at the time.

"Maybe on occasion one must be a bit more blunt to make things happen, but that is absolutely no excuse for disrespect and insolence, like you have just shown. So, now, I am telling you instead of asking you, be a little more courteous to the people in this castle, and those outside its walls. I will not have my people degraded." The look in Anian's eyes showed his obvious displeasure.

"Insolent?" Fabiana said glaring at him. "How dare you call me insolent while you sit here in your castle studying theory and talking about the people being degraded. The ruler of the people sets the standard for how great they may become. The only way to degrade them is to avoid reaching our potential."

"Actually, there are many ways to degrade a people. Tax them until they are hopeless. View them as expendable. Act as if your own station is not wholly dependent upon them." Anian looked more than a little miffed now. "I'm studying theories because, sometimes, it is better to learn from the mistakes of the past than repeat them yourself."

"But our station is not fully dependent upon the people," Fabiana corrected. "God has chosen us to rule over the people, and had he not, we would not be on the throne. Don't you ever pay attention to what the monks and nuns say?" The divine right to rule was perhaps the only religious topic to which Fabiana had ever paid close attention, but she had paid attention to something.

She had to admit to herself that he had a point about not repeating the mistakes of history, but she didn't want to admit it out loud. "But anyways, you study the mistakes of history, I'll be getting practical experience."

Anian had to laugh at that. "Who guards our borders? Grows our food? Trades for our goods? The people. If everyone in this castle were to leave for greener pastures, what position would we be in?" He shook his head. "Life is but one great race, and all God has decided is who has mules and who has horses." He thought for a moment. "God also decided that woman should obey man, which is something that perhaps you should take to heart."

"Perhaps so," Fabiana said, "but daddy says that's because men are stronger and more able for that sort of thing. You have not shown me that is true of you yet. My grandmother knows how to sit and read books." Fabiana then turned her head to the side to try and look out into the hallway as if she were ignoring him. She had no idea why it was so fun to annoy and contradict Anian, it just was. She hoped he would get all flustered over this.

"Perhaps your grandmother can sit and read her stories to her hearts content, but I doubt very much that she has the strength to handle you." Anian took Fabiana by the wrist and spun her around so that she was facing him. He had secretly worried that he would not have the strength, but now saw that he had been worried for nothing. "It has become clear to me that all of your objections to me come not from any true disagreement or dissent, but from a simple lack of respect, and I suspect that you greatly enjoy trying to knock me off my perch. But I will tell you this." Yanking her around once more, he landed one, resounding swat upon her backside."I will not tolerate this from my wife to be, and I will do what I have to to ensure that this attitude endures not."
