Spock answered softly, and he did understand why what he had done had been juvenile and unnecessary but he didn't want to come to terms with that while the Doctor had been present. "That's right," Jim once again confirmed, though this time took the opportunity to land the flat of the brush swiftly against the centre of Spock's backside--feeling it necessary to drive the point home while it was still fresh in the Vulcan's mind "So now that you realise how childishly you have behaved; what would have been a more suitable response for a second in command, can you tell me?" he pressed the brush flat against Spock's rear again, waiting patiently for an answer before he continued.

Spock yelped and kicked out, careful not to make contact with anything but the air. "Yow!" he whimpered and squirmed across his lap. "I-I...." though before he could answer, another hard whack cracked down across his bare behind and he squeaked in pain. The tears were slowly filling his dark eyes. "I-I...I do not know...C-C-Captain...." he answered truthfully. "I do not know what the a-alternative would have b-been....I sought a punishment s-session for the reason o-of security....what c-could I have d-done instead, sir?"

"For one; voicing your issue would have most likely curbed your need to act in such a destructive manner," Jim calmly explained as he landed another smack across Spock's backside, though only for lightened emphasis ofcourse "Had we been able to discuss the matter, Spock, I'm sure that we could have reached a solution that would have spared your dignity; did you really believe that forcing yourself into another punishment would really solve anything?"

"I would not have - OW! - discovered that you cared quite so much about my discipline had I not encountered another punishment, Captain." he answered softly. He then shook his head and did his best not to reach back and rub. "I could not have spoken to you about....such a childish issue, I am sorry....but I could not...that is within my control. A spanking is not. So please do not compare the two on the scale of pride and humility, I assure you, they are not the same."

The captain couldn't help but sigh at Spock's answer, not out of frustration but out of pure, quiet concern. He considered the matter for a moment, before turning a sombre gaze down to the half-man across his lap "Believe it or not Spock, I was exceedingly proud of the effort you had put in this morning; not only did you display fantastic initiative but you were a genuine help to everyone aboard this ship." He sighed once more "So, to take what you seem to feel you need into consideration; I'm going to ask you to list the reasons why such pride would now be over-shadowed--that would be a better help to you, wouldn't it?"

"Captain, that is unfair..." Spock answered softly, surely all the pride and kind words Jim had given him had not flown out the proverbial window because of the cry for attention he had made. Still, the Vulcan did not want to antagonize the Captain and he sighed softly, a tear slipping free. "Because you feel more disappointment for me, than you do for pride, naturally you turn to feel the former rather than the latter...." he answered. It was probably not the answer Jim was looking for, but Spock felt it needed to be voiced.

For the moment, the captain chose to regard Spock's soft-spokeness with a firm outer wall of silence; truth be told it was quite a heart-wrenching turning, attempting to convince the Vulcan that the foundation of pride he had built up had tumbled--but he steeled himself against the tear and prepared to hear his officer out.

"True," he responded quite kindly at the attempt, not quite catching his tone before it could have slipped against a child's ears than a full grown half-vulcan "But why am I so disappointed, Spock? Can you tell me that?"

Hearing the Captain confirm what Spock really hadn't wanted to hear, he felt something inside of him snap, freezing over the Captain's lap and not uttering a word. The only thing giving him life was the breath leaving through his nose. Otherwise he was as silent as the dead. The Captain always felt more disappointment for him than pride? That was so hard to hear, surely he was proud of him as a first officer, but apparently not.

"Spock?" Kirk's demeanour softened significantly at the form's sudden freeze. Quickly, he moved the hand pinning the Vulcan to his lap up to his back to rest gently atop his shoulder blade. There was a definite pulse, no worries about that--but his concern was still apparent "Spock? Are you alright?"
