Korra's early years(for Madcat)

One day Korra was out late at night with her polar bear dog Naga. She was laughing and having a good time as Naga ran around the South Pole a bit far away from the village. Naga ran up hills and jumped around in the air as Korra encouraged her "Keep going Naga" she said as she continued laughing and once Naga landed on the ground on her feet as she laid on the ground panting a bit. "Have a good rest girl" she said petting her head smiling.

Tonraq peered across the ice and snow surrounding the village, moonlight shining from the gleaming surface as another clear, cold night wore on. Few figures moved through the streets of the village, given the late hour and the freezing weather, though many windows glowed with light from the cookfires within, but just as many huts in the village were dark and silent, their occupants already asleep.

He looked back over his shoulder into the hut he shared with his wife Senna and their daughter, Korra. Though he'd already been through every room in the place, he nevertheless looked again, as if he might have somehow overlooked something. "Senna?" he called, "Have you seen Korra?"

His dark-haired wife stuck her head around the corner of the pantry, where she was just finishing cleaning up from the dinner the family had shared some hours before. She appeared thoughtful, brow furrowing, before shaking her head, "No, I don't think so. Not since dinner... well, wait. She said she was taking Naga for a walk."

Tonraq "hmmph"ed and turned back to the door, once again peering out into the moon-bright night. "I remember that, but that was two hours ago! She should have been back by now. If I've told her once, I've told her a hundred times..." he trailed off, a sudden thought coming to his mind. Though it had been nearly a century past, the people of the Southern Water Tribe still told tales of the Hundred Year War, and the Fire Nation soldiers who had hunted their Water-benders to near-extinction.

He gathered his cloak from its peg near the hearth. "Well, I'm going out to look for her," he told Senna, "I know Naga can look after her, but... just in case." Senna nodded, shaking her head, having herself recently scolded her daughter for staying out well past curfew in the freezing weather, when sudden frosts or wind-storms could pose a risk to a late-night wanderer.

After a while Korra got onto Naga's back "go Naga!" she ordered as Naga roared and ran back towards the village. Korra always felt so alive when she rides Naga at night with the snow falling it just made her feel invincible and free. "Hyah" she said as she cracked the reigns on Naga's neck as Naga jumped into the air as she landed and continued running she saw a figure. As she got closer and closer she noticed that it was her father. "Shit Dad!" she said as she made Naga stopped and got off of Naga.

Tonraq could not help but hear the roar of the polar bear dog and froze momentarily, before he reassured himself that it was, indeed, Naga, and not another of the vicious predators. Attacks were rare, but not unknown, and though his daughter had apparently tamed one, no one else in the history of the tribe had ever done so.

As it was, he was slightly surprised to see Korra, riding atop the massive bear dog's back, draw so close before spotting him, though he figured he must be concealed by the shadows of the village at night. He folded his arms across his broad chest and sighed, shaking his head, the cold, still air of the night carrying his daughter's words to him.

"Korra!" he called, not caring if anyone else was up and about to hear him scold her, perhaps slightly wishing someone *was*, as maybe a bit of deserved humiliation would make her more mindful, "Do you have any idea what time it is?!"

Korra bit her lip a bit and slumped a bit as well. "Uh sorry dad I lost track of time" she said rubbing the back of her head laughing nervously. She yawned and stretched "Oh boy am I tired? let's go home dad" she said hoping to get out of her punishment as she started to walk Naga back to their hut.

He widened his eyes in exasperation, though the effect was lost, somewhat, in the night. "Lost track of time?!" he exclaimed, "What did your mother and I tell you your curfew was?! Did taking Naga for a walk really require riding across half the country!?! Did he really need three hours?!?! Answer me when I ask you a question!!!!" He sounded really angry, which he was, somewhat, though not as much as his tone suggested. He was simply at the end of his rope with her, as she had, almost overnight (at least to him) gone from a sweet, well-behaved little girl to an argumentative, rebellious adolescent. Her quick mastery of bending elements had certainly not helped matters, as even he thought she lacked the discipline normally found in the practitioners of water-bending.

"I'm sorry dad but i get lost in the moment you know the feeling of the wind against me and the snow falling I don't have much time left to be a kid I'm the Avatar pretty soon I'm going to have to protect people and other things" she said to him. "Never mind it's not like you would understand, you don't have to carry the burden of the avatar" she said looking away from him as they reached their hut as she took Naga to her stable and walked over to the hut.

"You should try being the father of the Avatar," he began, half under his breath, and then continued, louder, "That's exactly what I'm talking about! Protecting people and other things! In this case, me protecting you! Spirits! You think I want to come out here and find you at the bottom of a cliff or, or, or frozen under a lake or something?!"

Even as he said it, he knew how dumb that sounded, as freezing to death in the snow or drowning in a lake, even one that was frozen over, was not much of a risk to a water-bender, but he continued anyway, letting his frustration get the better of him, "Yes, in a few years, you'll be ready to take up the mantle of the Avatar but before then, young lady, you'll have to follow the rules and do as you're asked!"

She sighed "Dad what is there to worry about I can protect myself. Also I'm used to the cold and I'm not dumb enough to jump into a lake and drown" she replied rather stubbornly. "Dad I know you want to protect me but I'm not a little girl anymore." she protested " I'm sorry I'll listen to the rules I promise not to be out too late next time" she said before going into her room.

Tonraq grumbled to himself. If it wasn't so blasted cold out here, he might take issue with her walking off, but, as it was, he followed her into the warm house after giving Naga a reassuring rub on her shaggy head. He didn't have Korra's bond with the animal, of course, but it was the least he could do, he thought, to tell the polar bear dog that she, at least, wasn't in trouble.

He closed the door behind him as he entered the house behind Korra, who had been intercepted by Senna in the main room. Recently, they had talked at length about Korra's attitude and behavior, and determined that the family was, indeed, heading into the time of the Terrible Teens, and that the only way they would ever get through to her was if they worked together, as parents.

Senna sat cross-legged on a low-backed, padded bench, arms folded as she looked up at Korra, having heard most of the conversation outside through the window but, especially, the girl's most recent promise to mind the time.

"Isn't that what you said last time, Korra?" she was saying, though her voice lacked the sternness of Tonraq's, instead the question sounding almost rhetorical, for she knew full well it was, as it was the teen's most-used expression to end one of their parental lectures, "And, yet, here we are again. In fact, if I might guess, I would say this is at least the fifth or sixth time you've promised that very thing in the last couple months at least!"
