Resources for game creation
Hey!
I recently completed all of Godspeak's tutorials and extra tutorials, and feel like I've got a pretty good grasp of how to structure the programming in RPGmaker MV to create some original content.
But before I get started, I wanted to ask some of you seasoned creators if you make everything from scratch, and if not, where you might procure additional resources.
I'm talking about maybe a catalogue of javascript files (with descriptions) that does this particular thing to the game, or maybe some tilesets that cater specifically to this or that genre, or possibly a forum where technical limitations or workarounds are discussed and explored.
I'm not going to start off making the game I really want to make, but smaller pieces of concept that I might learn from.
Thank you for all help you might provide a rookie.

Well, yes. I Have looked at them, but I have no idea how good they are and if there are other, more active/friendlier/better/more user friendly sources out there.
But if you're saying they're good, then hooray!

That's a good way to start. A lot of projects start too big and the creators lose interest after seeing how tedious game making is.
As for tiles and character sprites, RPGMaker provides almost all of those, although they can be edited so some stuff is removed or added very easily. RPGMaker also has a character sprite builder built into it. If you want to customize stuff beyond what is given, you can use a simple picture editor like paint, or a more advanced one dedicated to sprite making like Pyxel Edit.
Sounds and music are also provided with any RPGMaker version, but there are a few spanking sound files that are pretty much open to anyone that you can get by extracting them from another rpgmaker game.
As for the functions and possibilities with the game code, you'll have to find that out by messing with the event options yourself. If you want to get into the nitty-gritty there is javascript documentation in RPGMaker too, but I didn't have much luck comprehending it as a newbie to the language. Other than that, people more experience in Javascript have made plugins that add extra features to the game, Yanfly is most well known. They usually have their own instructions on how to use them as well.

For your questions. I think you can start by using the base resources in RPG maker and add some specific tileset (e.g. the Paddle, Straps etc from Bagool which you can find in his Spanquest). If you want to do some small edits, you can watch a few intro videos to gimp and do them yourself. I actually just started (after 9 month) to use non-standard tilesets on a larger scale (e.g. other trees). I think what is defintely worth it is extending the character generator, otherwise especially the clothing gtes rellay repetitive and there is very few clothes for common people (if you want to do a fantasy setting).
I don't think you'll need Plugins (yet). If the need arise you can look out the already mentioned yanfly or hime. For support (and a huge amount of very cool tilesets, battlers etc), definitely check out the rpg maker forum, it's the biggest one and worth it.
Edit: I started RPG Maker by watching some intro Videos on Youtube, I can only recommend that!

I was actually just thinking of getting RPG maker too seeing everyone else use it. But which one should I buy? It looks like there's several different ones.

It's probably a good idea to get the latest version, that is RPG Maker MV. There are tons of assets and plugins and it's the version that currently gets update. However, I'd advise to wait till it goes on sale on steam (which is at least 5 times a year) and not pay the full price.
