The Other Half Of Pike Place (for marianna)

This was by far the most restful sleep Lucy had gotten in weeks. No sounds of footsteps running down the halls, no cries of Pokemon demanding to be fed and played with, and, best of all, no children arguing. She knew she certainly owed Misty a huge favor for volunteering to have the girls over to the Cerulean Gym for a few days while she and Daisy got some rest ("because you two look like you're going to keel over at any second.") Even if it was only for a little, she felt like she would be indebted to her sister-in-law for the rest of her life. When the alarm went off (at the glorious hour of 10:00 for the first time in ages) she almost didn't want to open her eyes. She could have slept all day if Daisy let her.

When Daisy woke, she was too drowsy to get up, and yet she was no longer tired enough to fall asleep. She lay there, buried under the layers of warm blankets, and felt like the filling in a toasty roll. When she'd mustered the energy, she brushed Lucy's cheek with her hand.
"Hey, angel," she whispered. "I guess we'd better get up now."

"...Do we have to?" she asked tiredly, not opening her eyes quite yet. If asked a few times, Daisy could probably be talked into sleeping another half hour. She was more worried about Shuckle, who was probably already annoyed that breakfast wasn't on the table at the usual time. She expected he would come in any minute, whining for his banana and nutella crepes, and yank the covers off of them with his mouth. Of course, that was easily solved by recalling him to the Pokeball...

"I guess. . .we could lie around for a little while longer." Daisy closed her eyes. "Just until we get hungry - and Shuckle starts screaming."
She didn't keep her eyes closed for very long, though, but opened them to watch Lucy. When she lay there like that, she looked more beautiful than ever, cuter and sweeter and almost angelic.

The peace didn't last, however. Ten minutes into their failed attempt at waking up, Shuckle did come slithering in to demand they start their day. He gripped the covers in his mouth and pulled with all the might his 45-pound body could muster, dragging the blankets off of them. Then, when they were cold, he told them he had tried to make waffles, and now the smoke detector in the kitchen was going off. Nothing was on fire, but could they please stop it from beeping? It was getting annoying.

"Oh, SHUCKLE!" Daisy shivered her way out of bed. "Come on, hun. So much for sleeping in."
She grabbed a pillowcase and plodded off to the kitchen, where she beat at the air instead of at the target she really would have preferred, Shuckle's head.

Lucy joined her in the kitchen and began salvaging Shuckle's attempt at waffles. He had gotten the batter right, but not the cooking part. "Strange to only make breakfast for two again instead of nine," she remarked. Shuckle cleared his throat, reminding her that that was his waffle batter she had her spoon in. "Okay, three," she amended. "But the point stands."

Daisy continued to beat at the smoke. "You know what else is strange? A Pokemon who can cook even though he doesn't have hands, but can't pitch in to wash the dishes or pick up after himself."

Shuckle said he always thought red hair on a human was particularly strange, but he didn't go around pointing it out, did he? Lucy "accidentally" flicked a glob of waffle batter onto his shell where he couldn't reach it for the remark. Had it been anyone else in the house who'd done that, Shuckle would have blown a raspberry and reminded them of the Pecking Order... but he kept silent. Soon enough, the waffles were done, and Shuckle took his plate on his back and slithered away to bed to have breakfast.

Back in bed at last, Daisy fed Lucy a bite of her waffle, then copped a bite of hers.
"How have you been feeling, hun? It's been days since we got to talk by ourselves."
