Spankings in a Zombie Apocalypse (for animefangirl)

John turns the wheel hard to the right, spinning into the turn as he races through the empty downtown streets. His military Hummer has been modified slightly to handle such treatment, but it was still a strain on the nerves of his passengers when he had to drive this way. Several times, it seemed like the vehicle was about to roll over into a somersault, but John still managed to keep all four wheels on the pavement as he pushes it through the abandoned city. Every few moments, he turns his attention briefly to the rearview mirror to survey the situation.


“Damn, I think that we have half of this city’s former population chasing after us. I was hoping to be able to hole up here for a bit longer before we drew attention to ourselves.”


Had this been on open highway, he would have already easily outdistanced the shambling horde of zombies chasing after them. However, the city streets were a maze of obstacles to avoid, with twisted wrecks littering the roadways from the final days that this city knew life. Now, it was all that he could do to keep a relatively safe distance from the amassed undead before he can find the freeway.


“We should have been able to hide here for weeks. What were you thinking?”


He turns and glares briefly at a passenger, before quickly returning his attention to the road ahead and plotting his path.

Tess gripped the handlebar to her dad's Hummer as he drove like a crazy person, and if she hadn't been used to it she probably would have been freaking out but this was unfortunately not a new occurrence. She looked out the back window as he drove, watching as the zombies continued to slowly gain on them thanks to the obstacle course the street turned into. She looked back up at her dad when he spoke about wanting to hole up here for a while and bit her bottom lip slightly, since this was sort of her fault. At least the fact that they couldn't stay here longer was her fault--with the help of one of the other passengers, a sixteen year old boy named Jeremy. She looked back out the window as they continued to drive, sort of nervous that they were not going to be able to get away this time, but then she heard her dad snapping at Jeremy. "Back off of him! It's not his fault you're a paranoid ass. We had an opportunity to take out a nest of those things and we took it, how were we supposed to know that it would attract every damn zombie in the area?" She sort of snapped at him, thinking about the grenade she and Jeremy had thrown into an abandoned house full of the zombies. It had been a good plan, Jeremy's plan, and she'd agreed to help him pull it off but it sort of backfired when the explosion let the rest of the former population know that they were here--hence their current predicament.

Normally, John would have something to say about his daughter's language and attitude, but he has a few other things on his mind at the moment that prevent him for paying much attention to disciplining her. He would probably remember later, though.


“How were you supposed to know? When is it ever a good idea to jam a stick into a hornet nest? Do the math, kids. This city had over three hundred thousand people living in it. That's almost three thousand people to each square mile. How many survivors have we run into? That means that almost everyone in this city is either dead, or living dead. If you make a commotion, there's going to be zombies nearby to hear it!”


When the plague had originally struck this city, it was nighttime, and most of its inhabitants were woken up to meet their doom. This means that almost the entire city was wiped out without much of a fight. On the bright side, though, this also prevented the kind of widespread panic that took down the other cities, with thousands cramming the roads and highways in a mad attempt to leave the devastation. That's the only reason that he can even maneuver the vehicle through these roads. He stays far away from other cities because all of the roads are blocked with cars in an endless traffic jam.


“Everyone, hold on!”


The vehicle careens into another turn, losing a bit more ground as he has to slow down to maneuver. A few of the zombies are close enough to reach the side of the Hummer, and start to paw at the windows to get at the living flesh inside. The only open window was John’s, which he kept down so he could better see the terrain. As one of the zombies reaches for him, he reacts against the danger.


“Damn it!”


From above his head, he rips a shotgun from where he had it held to the roof with velcro. Turning in his seat just enough to get a clear shot at the monster, he fires the shotgun at close range and blasts a portion of the zombie’s head away. Since buckshot would do little against the walking dead, John always kept solid slug shot as ammo, just to be sure that a kill was a kill.

Normally Tess wouldn't have said something like that to John, since she knew she was not allowed to talk to him like that or get an attitude with him, but this was sort of a stressful situation for her too and she just didn't appreciate him verbally attacking her only friend in this car since the other survivors that she and her dad had managed to collect to travel with them were all much closer to his age than hers. So she got angry and told him to back off, adding that they couldn't have known and she glared at John when he told them to 'do the math' and went on to basically tell them that they'd been stupid to do it. "I'm not an idiot Dad, I realize it wasn't a great idea now but they're always gonna outnumber us if we don't start killing the ones we can!" She said, still in a snappy tone of voice as she looked nervously out the back window of the car at the zombies. She was distracted a few seconds later when John told them to hold on and she grabbed the handlebar attached to the ceiling again as he careened around a corner and a few of the zombies caught up to them. "Dad!" She called out, sounding scared when she saw one reaching for him, but her fear was unwarranted since he ended up ripping down the rifle from the ceiling and blowing the zombie's head off. "We need to get some space, I'm going on the roof" She announced, grabbing her own rifle and climbing up through the window on the roof of the car. She kept her legs hooked inside so she would not fall off the roof, which was something she'd done before but she knew her dad didn't like since it was dangerous, but she didn't think that they had another choice right now. Once she was on the roof she had a vantage to start shooting and she didn't waste time in taking out the ones closest to the car, feeling more or less safe up here since the zombies couldn't reach her and her dad was driving fairly fast. She had really good aim, since she'd grown up an army brat with her dad and he'd taught her how to shoot even before the zombies attacked, so every shot she fired hit it's mark since she knew how important it was to conserve ammo.

John averts his eyes to his daughter long enough to glare at her for both her language and her attitude, starting to tire of both of them. Once again, though, he files the information away in his head to deal with later, knowing that this is neither the time nor the place to scold Tess. While he doesn't approve of her climbing onto the roof of the vehicle, they are in no position to complain about it. At this point, it wouldn't be much more dangerous than just being in the car, anyway.


“Tess, they're always going to outnumber us! If you could kill one every minute of every day without ever going to sleep, it would still take you about ten years just to kill off the zombies in this state, alone. Our only real hope is to avoid them as much as possible and hope that decomposition eventually takes its toll on them.”


John pops the shotgun once to bring up another round, and then turns around once more to fire off a shot at the next closest zombie. Knowing that it was futile to try to fight them off, he drops the weapon on the seat and returns his attention to the road. They were almost to the highway, which should give him the open road that he needed in order to truly get some distance.


“Aw, crap…”


Ahead, a small group of about a dozen zombies squats in the middle of the road, presumably huddled around a recent kill. As the Hummer approaches, they stand and start to advance towards the speeding vehicle.


“Everyone, hold on! Tess, get your backside back in here!”


John rolls up his window and guns the accelerator, barreling down the narrow street at full speed.

Tess noticed the glare that he leveled at her, and it was actually enough to get her to snap her mouth shut before she could dig her figurative grave deeper. She knew he was going to at least scold her for it later, but right now she was't worried about it. Instead she announced that they needed to get some space to get out of here and climbed up on the roof to start shooting, listening as he sort of ranted at her about the zombies always outnumbering them. "Yeah, yeah, I know." She said in an annoyed tone of voice, "This really the best time to talk about this Dad?" She added as she fired at a few more zombies as he continued to speed down the road. She kept htat up until they neared the highway and then she looked ahead at the group of zombies that seemed to be feeding on something, getting a sort of sick feeling in her stomach at the sight and when John called for her to get back in the car she actually obeyed and slid back inside, closing the window after her and locking it before putting her seatbelt back on. "You planning on running them over?" She asked a bit incredulously as he sped at the zombies, her hands gripping the seat somewhat nervously as she tried to brace for the impact just in case.

“You've got a better idea?”


There are numerous reasons that John chose the vehicle that they use. Naturally, it could go further on a single tank of gas. It was also designed to go on all terrains, allowing them to maneuver out of situations that a normal car couldn’t. More importantly, though, the Humvee was a large and powerful vehicle, and could easily muscle through obstacles that would leave other cars in a crumpled heap. When the car collides with the smaller mob of zombies, half of them are fall like dominoes and are crushed underneath the wheels, while the others scatter in a flurry of broken bodies resembling a perfectly bowled strike.


“Hell, yeah! That’s what I’m talking ‘bout!”


Ahead of them was the open road of the highway. John races up the entrance ramp and puts the pedal to the metal, easily outrunning the remaining zombies attempting in vain to catch up. With the problem averted, he switches on the windshield wipers to clean off the zombie bits left from the collision.

Tess shook her head when he asked if she had a better idea, gripping the seat harder as he sped towards the zombies and gasping slightly as they hit the creatures and sent body parts and guts flying all over the place, feeling a bit green at the sight though she shook that off since she tried her best to be 'tough' so that John wouldn't worry about her so much. She rolled her eyes when her dad crowed out the 'hell yeah' thing, it on the tip of her tongue to tell him to watch his language since he would usually say that to her if she said something like that but she didn't want to risk embarrassing him in front of the others so she held her tongue. Soon enough they outran the zombies and she sighed in relief as she sagged back against the seat and scrunched her nose at what he was wiping off the windshield. "That is way beyond gross" She muttered as she hoped that it would rain and wash that crap off. "How far is it to the next place we're gonna hide out?" She asked then, hoping that they would not get stuck sleeping in the car for an extended period of time again since that was not comfortable with a bunch of passengers.

(how many people are in the car? Just curious how many traveling companions they have ^^)

John sighs, keeping his attention on the open road in front of him. While there were still a few abandoned wrecks up and down the roadway, it was still clear enough that he could move at a fairly normal highway speed. The zombies apparently stay mostly to the lower areas, only rarely appearing on the higher interstate path.


“I don't know, yet. I’m going to drive for a hundred miles or so, and then see if I can find someplace relatively safe to gas up and rest for a bit.”


He has just about had it with trying to stay around cities, though. While the relatively close proximity to supplies and gear seems to be an advantage, the increased levels of danger from staying in previously heavily populated areas is just too high to continue putting himself and the others at risk. His next option is to seek out something rural, where there were fewer people to be infected, and hope that he would still be able to locate supplies that they needed.

Tess heard his sigh and thought for a second that she'd upset him, and she tried to figure out what about what she said was bad but then he answered and she realized he was probably just tired or frustrated. She nodded at his answer, leaning back in her seat and looking out the window and the mostly deserted highway with a sort of depressed look on her face since not too long ago this would have been a busy highway full of happy people going about their lives and now it was totally empty except for them, it was a depressing thought. "How many people do you think are still alive?" She asked softly, not really sure if she'd get an answer or not but she asked it anyway. After he answered, if he were going to, she just settled down to watch the scenery as they drove and by the end of the hundred miles he wanted to drive they found a gas station and Tess got out of the car when they got there, still holding her gun since she knew from experience that going into a building without one was a bad idea. "I'm gonna go make sure the coast is clear inside while you gas up, coming Jeremy?" She asked, starting to walk towards the gas station with the other teenager but she would stop if John told her to.
