Above the clouds on an ever-snowcapped peak, it is said to be built above a powerful ley-line, and home to skilled wielders of magic.
Last night, all of this was lost. A raiding party of bandits overran the town, burning, looting, and indiscriminately killing anyone in their path. Screams filled the air, punctuated by the crackle of timbers set aflame. The orange glare. The acrid stench of soot mingled with blood. It was a night of terror unrivaled in their history.
As the sun peeks over the horizon, a haze of smoke lies low over the ruined buildings. The raiders have gone, leaving destruction, and loss in their wake. Those who have survived, by hiding, or pure dumb luck, crawl out from the rubble. What they make of the grim future is up to them.

This setting doesn't seem to have much to offer save for drama; it's very small and limiting in scope. While character-driven drama is good, it shouldn't really be a setting's onlyselling point. At least as far as I can see.
Which isn't very far.

The setting is limited in scope at the outset to drive character interaction. It's designed to grow with the player base.
A week after Marin was set up, there were five or six channels for different areas in the setting with nobody in them.
Nobody's saying the setting has to be static forever, but you have to have a focal point at first. It's just like any narrative, even if it's interactive. You grow the story. You let it unfold. It compels creativity that a big expansive universe wouldn't. Being a half-elf/half-dragon aristocrat archmage from the moon doesn't make you interesting. It makes you absurd.
Now let's open the floor to some suggestions of what people want. Just some options you'd like to have in a fantasy setting.

In Kendus City, on the banks of Alzi river, a wizard with a flair for charity purchased an Inn in the trade district. His life lived well, he seeked an eventful retirement. So he made a Sanctuary, a sanctuary for those who have lost everything, or those who have had everything turn on them. In this inn the lost and forsaken gather and recover before submitting themselves to the subtle cruelties of the world.
Bam, main area for characters to interact, reason for them to all be together, great liberty given to character creation. And I also figure adult characters can either be "Staff" or "Residents". Staff if you want responsibility, Resident if ye want to mess around.
