merlin-whippingboy-au

In which everything is the same except that instead of Merlin serving as Arthurs manservant, he serves as his whipping boy.

Can you tell my favorite character I drew here was Uther Pendragon?

Whippin boys were the only ones of the age of the prince, their only contact with others that were not lessons or gruff knights, so they were more often than not the prince's best friend, which made the sight of the whippin boy being punished a real torture for the prince since it was his only friend in the entire world, but that was only done when the King was not around, the king was the only one who could touch the Prince, so it was nearly impossible for the King to use the whipping boy, thing was that the King was not often around and the others had no right to punish the Prince, hence the whipping boy.

The king would have whipped the prince himself.

Well, just saying.

Well yeah true, but maybe Uther just wanted an excuse to whip Merlin XD And yes, though I'm not sure if Merlin is grateful or embarrassed for Gaius' treatment XD shall we say both?

yeah but what fun would that be for this AU LOL.....technically whipping boys were not a thing until the 15th century and 16th centuries and Merlin is set in the 6th...so yeah inaccuracies all around.
The one book called "The Whipping Boy" still had the king stand there having a servant whip the whipping boy and the prince cared little about it. so I guess everyone has their own idea about it in fiction.

Technicalities aside, I really like the picture, and I've always been a fan of your work :3 plus (it needs to be said) you drew Arthur much more accurately this time round

Erm, kings were quite gruff, they cared not for the whipping boy since they were Kings, chosen by god, that's why the princes could not be touched by others but the king. But well, it's just a comment of how it would be Arthur the one receiving the whipping if the king was the one delivering nwn. Editing as I saw another comment, yes, you're very, very right. Another edit, real cases the whipping boy was quite cared for the prince, one was even named a lord once the prince was king.

I noticed what he was reading too, through I wasn't fast enough to comment
I love this peace. I recognized Uther immediately, and Merlin had me laughing so hard. "What? Are you kidding me? AGAIN?" Poor lad
Keep up the great work hon ^^

And about whipping boys... I always thought, the whipping boy is to teach the prince, that his poor choices make other suffer. So he would know, he's responsible for his country

The whipping boy concept is something thats been around for a very long time and in use by many different monarchies in countries thousands of miles and thousands of years apart and a tradition only used inconsistantly within them. You can't say there was a definative role that all of them held in all those different eras or that one ideology backed the entire traditional universally.

You can see those who've been quoting wikipedia's terrible article verbatum pretty clearly since they've repeated all of the eurocentric medieval/early modernists revisionist bias that whoever wrote it focused on exclusively and added nothing else - presumably because they, like the author of that rather typical-for-wikipedo's article, don't know of any others.
If thats one criticism I have repeatedly made about early modernists that I've met/read is that often their historiography focus leaves them writing in such a way that excludes all possible precedents.
Christ Alive, William Murray was practically unique, he was not the identical model that was followed by pretty much anyone else, ever. It was an extreme defensive response by an edgy monarchy that could feel its legitimacy bleeding away. "We're special, we're unique, we're different - look how different we are to all you plebs! GOD put us here, really!"
Cromwell's seperated body must be spinning in both of his graves at Charles getting all this unique exposure~

Lady Shiroi has the right of it though, the very concept of a 'whipping boy' as a figure of speech as well as a concept was born out of alternative punishments inflicted to remind the royal of the suffering and that their actions can have effects on many others inflicted on those of any youngsters inner circle - not just princes, refered punishments were practiced in many aristocractic familes - and on many individuals - of many ages, not just one nominated person in an inner circle of the same age - any of the individuals chaperoning courtly friends good be punished and mostly this wasn't corporal (groundings; can't dance at a party; no sword fighting lessons for a month; not being allowed to go see the hanging next week; etc) that was inflicted on the whole group to punish the one.
