I don't go in much details of its context. Recently, I fell in love with the manga and the show, so this is my tribute on this masterpiece.

Isabella punishes her orphan girl Emma for not permitted trespassing. This fence has a special meaning in the story, so again, insiders know.

Regardless what one thinks of corporal punishment of kids, this is actually better than what Isabella does later in the show.

Good for you. Just stick with the manga after season 1, the anime basically skip/changed everything and it was not even in a fun way.

Cartoon Network had the anime on during the over night Saturday-Sunday slot a year or so back. While the initial situation the children were in prevented them form knowing the truth, anybody here who met a such a kind, caring, gentle, understanding, this side of permissive person like Isabella in the first season would definitely realize quickly that this was too good to be true.
