Here's my entry!
I spent an ungodly amount of time mixing the colours...it's all hand-painted! Straight from my acrylics tubes, no computer tweaking, just used the scanner to upload it.

I tried to copy the original style is terms of how they are pretty expressionless and there are some "mistakes" done on purpose. I had fun!

~~~
Edit/added: I ran out of time last time, but here's a bit of backstory. The god I put in this picture is the famous Horus, son of the less famous Osiris.
Osiris was killed by his jelous brother Set and cut into many pieces. Isis (wife of Osiris) reassembled him, but could not find his penis, so she made a new one out of gold and somehow got pregnant with Horus with that. Religion of four thousand years ago, I'm not lying.
Eventually Horus grew up and had revenge of Set, who may or may not be dead, depending on which legend you're reading.
And so Horus is then regarded as a god of justice among many other things.
I decided to include him because if there was any god that taught mortals how to punish their children, it would be justice god Horus.
For a while I considered Anubis, because he's cool; but his realm is death, so even if he is a good judge he does not have as much sway over the living. My reasoning anyway.
I made an unrelated drawings of Anubis and Isis, you can email me if you want to see them.
About the drawing: to get the old papyrus styke paper, you soak it in oolong tea over night. It looks cooler (older if you crumple it up).
The child's shoulder's on this picture bothered me A LOT. The original style demands that I show his chest but the position does not work ಠ_ಠ
I also had trouble with his hair, I knew the shaved all but one lock, but I could not find any references of it.
I'm really happy with how the man turned out though, his jewels even look like lapis lazuli
PS: was I seriously the ONLY one to do M/m for this contest?
I was thinking of same approach but watercolor... Wrinkled paper works great. And the side view faces too.
I think the handpainted colors and the paper give it a more...authentic look? I'm not sure how to really describe it, but I think it came out really nicely because of that! And wow, you definitely put a lot of work into this, and it came out well!
"A boy's ear is on his back. He listens when he is beaten." It's an Egyptian proverb. Hahaha. So I think that the idea you had for the contest is also really clever! Good thinkin', rahl!
You definitely put a lot of work into this. I know you want concrit, but I felt bad trying to look for it since this came out rather nicely. I would say that maybe the black lineart came out a bit clumpy on the spanker's arm. But I really had to search for that, and I honestly think it turned out pretty well on the heiroglyphics, with the varying thickness of lines. So in a way, that can look really cool. ._. So I'm having trouble finding concrit, particularly since you're using a unique style like what you'd find on Egyptian walls, and it looks damn accurate from where I'm sitting.
Good job, rahl! Keep up the hard work, and I definitely better see more art from you soon!
I like it. It must have taken ages to do. . . and it does look much like the artwork of Ancient Egypt. I really, really like it.
Thank you for all the positive comments! I really appreciate them !
Mushy, I'll help you with finding the mistakes: you're right in that the thickness varies too much. The lines should be thin and straight. And Horus's Sceptre should be thinner and longer.
One last thing would be that this thing looks more like it was drawn on papyrus rather than on a wall and I don't think gods were put anywhere other than walls of temples. I could have made it have a rock-like texture with a computer but OH WELL. XD
Thanks again for all the nice comments despite the mistakes! Love you guys!
I would never have noticed the sceptre until you pointed it out. D: And I'm not sure about the papyrus/wall thing, since I'd have to look that up. But I really liked the papyrus look all the same. Besides, it's not supposed to be 100% accurate, really, since the contest can be a play on history. You did try your best, and it does show a lot, though. What matters is that you do try! (:
(And we all make mistakes. Just apply it to the next picture you work on - and I hope you're working on something! I'm anxious to see you improve as you go!)
